Heal the Town. 2023. East Oakland, CA. As a young child, I had a pencil break off inside my hand. As you can probably imagine, it hurt tremendously. To heal, the wound had to be closed. In order for that to happen though, the bleeding had to be stopped and whatever pieces of lead that shattered inside had to be removed first to prevent infection. I share this story to say that in order to be properly healed, whatever foreign entities that are causing the pain must first be removed by any means. Healing and recovery is not a simple or quick process; it’s messy and takes even longer to undergo than the traumas that occurred in the first place. What I’m attempting to do (through the visual arts) is express that being inauthentic and dissociative on social media platforms and in our day-to-day interactions are contributing to the dysfunctional society we are currently experiencing. I have no rights to judge others nor am I an authority figure in the realm of psychology or related fields. However, I strongly oppose glamorizing mental illness and those who claim that “it’s okay to not be okay” (from an advertisement I saw a few days ago); it’s certainly NOT okay to be not okay. That shouldn’t even be a statement. All I propose is getting to the root of collective suffering and admit to ourselves that we seek to live in freedom AND stability - it should not be an either-or situation. I don’t claim to have all the answers nor do I claim that the path forward will be clear to follow. I do stand by the notion of sincere change in each and every person CAN allow for a new collective perspective.
