It's been a few months since my last post. Breaking the silence to show off this amazing, huge Red Gum I climbed yesterday in Central Vic.
Removed a load of mistletoe to reduce the strain on the tree. It's hard to age these trees, but it'd have to be several centuries old, at least. It's got a big gnarly hollow at the base (big enough to sit in or crawl through), and lots of great big hollows up high for sheltering wildlife. Yesterday was the start of Reconciliation Week. Thinking about what that means as an arborist, being privileged enough to occasionally climb and care for trees like this that were here long before colonisation of this country. I imagine this would've been an important, significant specimen even then.

Throwback to these sketchy dead trees. One of them was very rotten, supposedly had been poisoned by the neighbour, at one stage full of bees, then set on fire, now crawling with wasps.
Fair play to Nick Broad for getting them down safely (I cant believe I initially asked Nick to climb these!).
Found this nail in the trunk on my last cut π€¦ββοΈ
Surprised my saw cut through it so easily

This client felt that the trees were taking up too much space, and was considering having them removed.
We convinced them to have the trees pruned instead, to allow better access and visibility. The Cypress (1-2) & Cedar (3-4) were pruned quite hard, but the Elm (5-6) was more subtle.
There's a Mischa in that tree!

Mischa's one of the main climbers on our crew. Here he is taking dead wood out of a gnarly old Blackwood #acaciamelanoxylon in Castlemaine. Photo 4 is Mischa's POV of said gnarlyness (borers, rot, deadwood on the main trunk)
This Yellow Gum was leaning way over the roof of the house and had already dropped a branch. Thankfully the homeowners wanted to keep the tree.
We did some weight reduction pruning and removed dead and dying branches to make the tree as safe as possible.

Before and after: pruning a neglected Prunus tree at a property we help manage in Daylesford town.
