What a nice surprise to see this work by William Harper at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of an exhibit “Afterlives: Contemporary Art in the Byzantine Crypt” /exhibitions/afterlives-contemporary-art-in-the-byzantine-crypt William Harper is a jewelry artist renowned for his workmanship in gold and the application of cloisonné enamel techniques in his brooches and necklaces. This box and enclosed brooch is an example of his more conceptual work, forming part of a series of “casks” containing brooches, or “tomb jewels” contained within. Harper was inspired by childhood trips to European cathedrals and his encounter with their treasuries. Here, he intends for the exterior surface of the container to appear rough and provisional, even threatening and dangerous to an extent–with the readymade nature of the box and use of found materials and fragments in marked contrast to the precious materials contained within–specifically, one of his gold brooches. The materials and techniques used in the box are suffused with historical references to other examples in the Museum’s collections, including cloisonné enamel; Kongo Nkisi power figures; and 20th century examples, such as the boxes of Joseph Cornell and Lucas Samaras.

Thursday night in Chelsea @c24gallery Don’t miss this exhibit, open till May 10th Ancestral Revolution, a solo exhibition of works by Cal Lane includes carved steel sculptures, braided tires, and assemblages made from heirloom china. The works represent highlights from a decades-long career of iconic work that has been shown in museums, public installations and private collections. Cal Lane is well known for her exquisitely crafted steel sculptures made from objects such as oil drums, shovels and other products of the industrial era, into which she cuts elaborate, lace-like patterns with a plasma torch. Her works are a meditation on the materials and aesthetics of gender, but more broadly, they explore the weight of ancestral constructs and traditions as they relate to the objects and patterns that build modern culture. A self-described minimalist, Lane chooses objects and materials that carry significant weight, both culturally, personally, and physically. The prevalence of lacey patterns in her steel work expresses her desire to break out of the gender norms that may feel stifling to so many individuals. Balancing the historical weight usually associated with such elements, she brings a refreshing perspective to the re-examination of patriarchal assumptions, often using humor to redefine traditions and offset expectations about materials. At a time when binary categories of all kinds are being questioned, we are excited to share the work of an artist who has created a new sort of dialogue around age old questions of identity. #snagmetalsmith @cal_lane_artist @pratt_institute_jewelry @inclusiveblacksmiths @ @adornaxis

Adornaxis Artists, are you teaching a workshop? What are you working on? We love to share the work of the artist from our Adornaxis exhibitions 📺 see our YouTube channel! Tag us ! @adornaxis Ann Parkin / US @a_parkin Ann Parkin (BFA) is a Canadian-born, New York-based artist whose current mixed-media art jewelry pieces explore science’s window into the poetry of existence. Anemoon Fokkinga / The Netherlands @anemoononfire My artist name is Anemoon On Fire and I make handbuild ceramic creatures. Because I’m a scuba diver I’m obsessed with oceans and marine life; together with my big concern about the future and pollution of the earth, I like to create a speculative evolution scenario where life finds a way, despite humanity. @janine_combes_jewellery Janine Combes works in an off-grid studio on Bruny Island, Australia, making a wearable range of jewelry for galleries while at the same time completing a Master of Fine Arts (Research). She has been a professional jeweler for thirteen years and has studied in Italy, Bangkok, and Australia. #artrotterdam #brunyislandjeweller #joyeria #jewelery #artisans #artist #artjewelry #modernjewelry #instajewelry #bijoux #bijouxcontemporains #gioiellicontemporanei #joiascontemporâneas #adornaxis #globaljewelry #contemporaryjewellery #artjewelry #contemporaryjewellery #snagmember #bijoucontemporain #bijouxfaitmain

Artists, Tag us ! @adornaxis 💎Andreia Gabriela Popescu / România@andreiagabrielapopescu Andreia Gabriela Popescu is a lecturer, designer and jewelry manufacturer who creates unique and sophisticated contemporary pieces since 2010, having multiple award-winning collections at prestigious international jewelry exhibitions and competitions. She uses platinum, gold, silver next to resin. 💎Alexandra Prelipcean / România @foambubblesjewelry I think Jewelry as Art to wear, fulfilling a profound need for self-expression. I aim to create sculptural, evocative objects that establish an emotional connection, bringing together the right piece with the right wearer. I often use alternative, non-precious materials- like paper, wool and wood, next to precious metals and pearls, questioning the value we give to jewelry. I use materials to encapsulate ideas, believing in the greater value of the message, of the emotion. Art jewelry offers me the creative freedom to experiment, to search for new ways of telling my stories, helping others to connect and to express themselves through the jewelry they wear. 💎Pallavi Verma / India @pallavi.verma Coming from a background of traditional Indian goldsmiths, Pallavi moved to Europe at the age of 19 to pursue a BA & MA Degree from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Jewelry Design & Gold and SilverSmithing. Pallavi’s work involves personal experiences from both eastern and western culture. Jewelry for her is about hidden revelations, the exploration of boundaries, emotions and identities. Her work aims to take jewelry beyond expectations by creating interactive pieces, through which she tries to involve or touch the wearer and the observer physically and psychologically. In 2018 Pallavi started her own jewelry brand, journey from being an art graduate to making a living through art and how to remain relevant to the present times @romanianjewelryweek @precious.collective #artistarjewels #artisans #artist #artjewelry #modernjewelry #instajewelry #bijoux #bijouxcontemporains #gioiellicontemporanei #joiascontemporâneas

❄️Midwinter in NYC seems a bit gray❄️ ⏳It’s time for a boost of color. Celebrating some of the artists we have been so honored to work with these last few years. Please follow along and don’t be shy. We love to see what you are up to! Tag us ! @adornaxis 💎Elaine Zukowski / US @ezukowskie I am a weaver, a creator of form by entwining linear elements. My affinity for this way of working has been present from an early age, and I find myself returning after years away. This could only be called my truth, the core of my impulse to express and communicate. For these pieces, using mild steel wire allows the beading to hold a shape that contains negative space. Their flexibility permits them to mold to the body’s shape, and the hollow interior allows light to catch the glass from all directions. The adornment evokes the impression of sweet candy, glistening with the possibilities of enjoyment 💎Jim Bové / US @jimbo_ve Jim Bové is an educator and artist living south of Pittsburgh. A residency to the Arctic Circle has been inspiration for a new body of artwork which takes that vast landscape, filled with ice and sky, and interprets it into an intimate scale for the human body. 💎Cecilia Martinez Amanzi / France @cma.jewelry Born in Argentina, she is an architect and a jeweler. She started taking lessons and working as an apprentice jeweler in 2011. Since the end of 2019 she is based in France where she started to explore new ways for developing her pieces by using textile materials applied to basketry techniques 💎Jason Stein / US @jasonsteinmetals Jason Stein is a jeweler, metalsmith, and shop manager at a jewelry store in Charlotte, NC. He holds a BFA from RIT and an MFA from ECU. His recent exhibitions include “Remnants & Relics” at the Appalachian Center for Craft in 2023 and “Metamorphosis” at the Bavarian Craft Council in Munich 2022 🔍@arrowmont_school @pocosinarts @brazil_jewelry_week @baltimorejewelrycenter #contemporaryjewellery #artjewelry #contemporaryjewellery #snagmember #snagmetalsmith #snagmember #klimt02

Adornaxis sharing this amazing Sightlines Exhibition with you in case you missed it! You can still see it online. Bard Graduate Center is a graduate research institute in New York City. Our MA and PhD degree programs, Gallery exhibitions, research initiatives, and public programs explore new ways of thinking about decorative arts, design history, and material culture. SIGHTLINES on Peace, Power & Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa Current Exhibition September 29 – December 31, 2023 https://www.bgc.bard.edu/exhibitions/25/about Will Heinrich of the New York Times recommends SIGHTLINES on Peace, Power & Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa in the 2023 Fall Arts Preview, calling it an “ingenious remix of a show” that “displays historic metalwork like a pair of elegant brass anklets from nineteenth-century Nigeria alongside works by Sharif Bey, Zohra Opoku and other artists from Africa and the African diaspora.” Delaina Dixon of Ebony magazine agrees, naming SIGHTLINES among a “host of stunning exhibitions and thought-provoking installations” to see this fall. Essence magazine’s Okla Jones added her voice to the chorus, calling SIGHTLINES a “can’t miss” show. And in its Fall Art Guide, Hyperallergic wrote, “Metal works by contemporary artists including Otobong Nkanga, Radcliffe Bailey, and Lubaina Himid are presented here alongside dozens of nineteenth- and twentieth-century objects ranging from ceremonial swords to currency. As [SIGHTLINES] traces the art historical significance of African metal art, it simultaneously delves into its sociopolitical implications. Sammy Baloji’s 2022 documentary Of the Moon and Velvet, which examines metal extraction in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is among the highlights of the exhibition.” @bardgradcenter #seeingsightlines @ad__wo @radcliffebaileyjr #Sammy Baloji @sharifceramics @lubainapics bronwyn.katz #kapwanikiwanga @abigaillucien #tsedayemakonnen @otobongnkanga zohraopoku #JuliaPhillipssculpture @nariward @awstudioart @adornaxis
