The first Creator’s Gala, organised in support of the new Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki, together with the auction held during the event, raised an incredible over €45,000 – for which we are extremely grateful and delighted. The gala and auction are part of the museum’s fundraising programme. The proceeds will be allocated in full to the realisation of the collection exhibition, one of the key pillars of the new museum, telling the story of Finnish architecture and design. The funds will also support the research and conservation of the national architecture and design collection, as well as the creation of new narratives and innovative ways of presenting them. We warmly thank all the companies, foundations and private individuals who took part in the auction and, through their support, are contributing to the next chapter of our national treasure. Our sincere thanks also go to the artists, designers and companies who donated works to the auction and supported the organisation of the event – without you, this would not have been possible. Preparations for the New Museum of Architecture and Design have advanced to the design development phase based on the winning proposal by @jkmmarchitects   The next phase of planning emphasizes ambitious climate and circular economy goals, including the exploration of recycled materials for different uses. @a_insinoorit serves as the project’s construction management consultant.   “Now the most important phase begins: developing the winning proposal into implementation plans and expanding the design to respond to the needs of the museum’s diverse user groups. The New Museum of Architecture and Design is one of the most significant museum projects currently underway in the field globally. There is also strong international interest in the kinds of solutions we will implement in this building project,” says Kaarina Gould, CEO of the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design.

Great news for the New Museum of Architecture and Design: the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design has reached its minimum endowment target following a two-million-euro donation from the Louise & Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation ⭐️   The returns from the capital assets will provide long-term financial support for the operations of the Museum of Architecture and Design in its new building, set to open in the early 2030s in Helsinki’s South Harbour.   Through the donation, the Louise & Göran Ehrnrooth Foundation will become a Founding Partner of the New Museum of Architecture and Design. We have big news to share: Carson Chan is named the Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs of the new Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki 🌟   Chan comes from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City where he has served as the inaugural Director of the Emilio Ambasz Institute and Curator of architecture and design since 2021.   “We aim to build a leading and inspiring museum for the creative industries in the Nordic context, with a cross-disciplinary and innovative approach. The international design competition for the Museum of Architecture & Design, which began in April 2024, culminated in the announcement of the results at Helsinki City Hall on Thursday 11 September 2025. The jury unanimously selected the winning proposal titled “Kumma”, designed by JKMM Architects @jkmmarchitects . The lead designer is architect Samuli Miettinen. JKMM’s winning team includes the following collaborators: Akukon (acoustics, AV technology), Granlund (HVAC design, energy calculations), MIR (visualisation), Pentagon Design (service design) and Ramboll Finland (structural design, carbon footprint calculations, climate change mitigation and adaptation, electrical and lighting design, geodesign). The next phase in developing the winning proposal will begin in collaboration with the museum’s various user groups and experts in sustainable construction. Finnish architecture firm @jkmmarchitects has been selected as the winner of the international design competition for the new Museum of Architecture & Design with its proposal “Kumma”. The jury reached a unanimous verdict in the anonymous competition. Jury chair Mikko Aho commented on the winning entry: “Kumma blends into the urban environment while respecting its surroundings. It also stands out as a recognisable landmark. In the cultural landscape, the treasured views from Tähtitorninvuori towards the Market Square and Katajanokka are preserved. The recycled brick façade and the terrace encircling the building bring warmth to the sculptural architecture, strengthening its connection to the city.” Finland’s Minister of Science and Culture, Mari-Leena Talvitie, congratulates the winners: “The new Museum of Architecture & Design is a major shared goal we’ve worked towards for years. Once completed, the museum will be a meeting place, a learning environment, and an international stage for Finnish expertise. At the same time, it will strengthen the role of architecture and design in shaping society and create conditions for sustainable growth.” A total of 624 proposals from around the world were accepted into the competition, with five finalists competing for the win.
