🐟 It’s herring run season in Massachusetts — one of the clearest signs of spring on the South Coast!🐟
River herring spend most of their lives in the Atlantic Ocean before returning each spring to the same freshwater rivers and ponds where they were born.
Maintaining healthy herring runs takes ongoing care and stewardship. Over the past year, significant work was done to improve and prepare this run for the season ahead, and this year’s migration has not disappointed! Seeing thousands of fish successfully moving upstream is a rewarding reminder of why habitat maintenance and restoration matter.

Cranberry vines need a little tough love every few years 🌱✂️
Over time, long-running vines start to take over, pulling nutrients into growth instead of fruit production. To keep a bog thriving, growers use a few proven pruning methods—like ice and barge sanding.
Another approach is a more traditional style of pruning—similar to what you’d see in other types of agriculture—by physically cutting and removing the long-running vines. This method allows the shorter, more productive vines to keep producing in the same season, while setting the stage for an even stronger crop next year.
Today, we used this hands-on method to prune back long-running Howes vines on a bog in Carver, helping maintain both the health and productivity of the vines. 🔴🌿
One of our colleagues shared this stunning sunrise over the cranberry bogs this morning- what a way to kick off the first day of Spring! Happy Spring, everyone!
As we prepare for this weekend's Snowmageddon, we are reminded how snow benefits agriculture: it insulates the plants and delivers nutrients, to name two benefits.
Did you know that Frogfoot Farm, our partnership with the Marion Institute, generated over 12,331 pounds – or 116,744 servings – of produce this year? We are honored to be a part of this important work to address food insecurity in our region. #nofarmsnofood
