Today is Day 1.
50 years ago, my grandparents established a theatre group called Charbak.
50 years later, today, Charbak celebrates its 50th birthday. Today, for the very first time - I take the stage as the lead actor in a play.
Over my 34 years of existence, I’ve been on stage since the age of 4. With Banjara, Thikana, Apsara Theater-er Mamla, Doodh Kheyeche Meow and Ekhon Tokhon.
On other shows, I’ve been backstage. On some shows, I’ve done lights, sound and stage design. I learnt the ropes on and off the stage from a list of ever growing men and women, who have held my hand and guided me through this journey.
I’ve grown up in green rooms and in the wings, raised and fed by makeup artists, cared for by light-men and set operators.
34 years. I’m stepping into the shoes of a character called Ashwini Chakladar, once essayed by the absolutely brilliant Sabyasachi Chakraborty. He was a maverick on stage in this role, effortless, hilarious and energetic unlike anyone else. Big, big shoes to fill. But with his blessings, I shall endeavour to do my best.
My father Arindam Ganguly directs this. This is a play close to his heart. It had run for 250+ shows, it also featured my mother Kheyali Dastidar in one of the lead roles.
Battling frequent panic attacks, shaky nerves, stress and pain - it all culminates today at 6-30pm, at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Cholo Potol Tuli.
This goes out to Jocchon Dastidar, Chandra Dastidar, Monika Chakraborty, Sujit Ghosh and Debangshu Sengupta. And to all the members of Charbak past and present.
