ADI is proud to support the launch of Sudhakar Nadkarni’s book “by design” - chronicles a lifetime of design, distilled through projects that were never merely about outcomes—but about learning, questioning, and transforming practice and design education. Across six decades, each project in this book emerges as a site of inquiry: where a simple shift in an alarm clock redefined usability, where observing everyday routines led to reimagining public systems like milk booths, where constraints of materials and manufacturing shaped form, and where failures were not hidden, but repurposed into new directions. From product design to exhibitions, from urban interventions to educational frameworks, the work reveals a consistent philosophy: design as a way of thinking—rooted in context, refined through experience, and guided by purpose to create meaningful social impact. This evening will reflect on how each project became a lesson, and how those lessons, in turn, shaped not just products—but institutions, pedagogy, and generations of designers. Design can change behaviour. Behaviour can change cities. Humara Shahar : A Civic Design Challenge at Maahi Roj 2026 Edition 12, invites students and young professionals to observe, question, and design for the shared spaces we use every day. An initiative by Anantaya at Maahi Roj, co-hosted by the ADI Jaipur Chapter. Participants may reach out to their mentor/teacher for any queries. A Google Meet link for mentors and college leads will be shared soon to explain the challenge brief in detail. Let’s design for the city we all belong to. __ HUMM - Many Makes One | HUM - Us Maahi Roj 2026 explores the idea that meaningful change begins with Hum-Us. This year’s theme, HUMM - Many Makes One celebrates collective intelligence-where diverse voices and disciplines come together like a shared resonance. From local civic responsibility to global interdependence, it invites us to rediscover collaboration, coexistence, and our role in shaping a more responsible world. #HumaraShahar #MaahiRoj #CivicDesign #DesignChallenge #SocialDesign

What does it mean to learn in the age of AI? At our recent March Design Brews session with Prof Mandar Rane , one idea stayed with us: Learning doesn’t happen when everything is smooth, but happens when you’re slightly stuck. That moment of friction, that’s where learning lives. As AI begins to take over execution, this becomes even more critical. Because if answers are always available then the role of education cannot be to simply provide them. It has to shift towards: → designing for curiosity → encouraging questioning → helping students stay with ambiguity a little longer We also revisited something fundamental to design: Usability. Functionality. Desirability. No matter how advanced the tools get, these principles don’t change. What changes is how we arrive at them. Maybe the real skill now isn’t just learning how to use AI tools but learning how to think, question and interpret what comes out of them and maybe the role of an educator today is not to simplify the path, but to make sure students don’t stop asking questions along the way. Thank you for being a part of our community and we look forward to seeing you at the next Deaign Brews + Networking on 26th April (link in bio!) A big thanks to Bombay Sweet Shop for their hospitality! We love the sweetness:) #DesignBrews #DesignEducation #AIinDesign #LearningByDoing #CreativeEducation ADI
