May Day is a celebration of the international working class. Whether it be the 8 hour day, minimum wage, healthcare, secure retirement, organised workers have fought at every step of the way to improve their lives.
Part of that struggle is the fight for shelter. Despite a country with a long history of dispossession, there’s a history of unions unabashedly fighting for affordable, abundant, safe and secure housing for all. Conditions at work and conditions at home are both inherently union business.
At Trades Hall, we spoke to the many unionists present about the need to continue this tradition, and oppose the demolition and privatisation of Melbourne’s 44 public housing towers. Destroying communities and livelihoods for the sake of profit is contrary to fundamental union values. Not only will it irreparably harm the local residents, but will mean an even less affordable housing market.

According to the federal governments State of The Housing System report, there was a let loss of over 1000 public homes in the 2024-2025 financial year. Furthermore, it was the first year that there was a net loss of community housing. This is an abject failure on the part of the Albanese Labor government’s promise to increase the stock of social housing.

Despite saying there would be no demolition works while residents are still in the building, Labor and Homes Victoria are pushing ahead.

The Labor government is illegally demolishing public housing. Despite residents still being in the building, Homes Victoria are sending in demolition teams.
Last week, the demolition company Mann, specialising in asbestos disposal, was seen on the Flemington Estate, where they’ve since hoarded up the entrance to 12 Holland Court.
Homes Victoria @homesvic promised public housing residents that no demolitions would commence whilst residents were still in the building. In fact, not only is asbestos being taken out while residents are still in there, but residents had no idea about the plans until after Mann arrived on site.
Homes Vic and @harrietshingmlc are flagrantly violating the rights of public housing residents, all for the wallets of their mates in development and investment.
Big thanks to H4H for organising the event, and for 44FU, Save Public Housing Collective, Victorian Socialists and everyone else for being there today at the rally. Only when we get together and collectively demand our rights and conditions to be upheld, can we possibly hope to win.
