Chasing the last days of winter. We managed to catch a snowstorm and capture a few MTB action winter shots. Two days of shooting and probably most of our time was spent clearing the track. To protect equipment from wet precipitation, I often use regular transparent plastic wrap. This is definitely one of the weirdest concepts I’ve ever shot. The fishes were swimming chaotically and getting them perfectly framed during the trick without blocking the athlete in front - was so much of luck. Turned out that their favorite spot was hanging out in the corner under the plants, not swimming around the whole aquarium as I hoped. There were performed so many jumps and air positions by 🐠 @arturscurakovs that I completely lost count. I bought the fish just for one day, consulted with a pet store in advance, and prepared the aquarium and water. A dive into Black & White – Cliff Diving shots we’ve recently captured. The main concept was the shot with the light trail that highlights the athlete’s flight time. I really love this technique of shooting action, because it’s a single exposure that shows movement in such a unique way. The hardest part of this kind of shoot is the darkness - the athlete has to perform the trick while diving into the water from height, without even seeing the water surface. And in mid-air, while surrounded by complete darkness, the flash of light can be blinding. Careful! Don’t get caught in the spider’s web! For some concepts it’s important to keep everything in focus. To make everything sharp in a frame, usually the aperture is stopped down, but sometimes even that isn’t enough. That’s why I found an alternative solution – Split Diopter filters/lenses. These lenses are often used in movies to keep both the foreground and background in focus within the same shot. So I thought it could be quite useful in some photography concepts as well. It took 16 backflip attempts by 🚴 @ansisblumbergs to catch the shot where the water splash lined up with the trick. I carved a small candle into a specific shape so that when dropped into the water, it would create a nice vertical splash. But besides the tough timing, the real challenge was the totally unpredictable nature of the splash - there was no way to control it, so we just had to rely on luck. Thought it was a plane... turns out it was just 🚀 @ansisblumbergs doing his thing. Light Trails action shots are a unique way to capture both the athlete’s movement path and the trick itself - all in a single frame. Here are a few tips to help you create shots in this style: • Place a strong, continuous light source behind the athlete. The brighter the light, the more visible the trail will be. • The darker the environment, the better your flashes and backlight will highlight the subject without a ghosting effect. • Also use high value flash power to eliminate ghosting on the athlete. • To ensure the light trail appears behind the athlete rather than in front, use rear curtain flash sync mode. • If you want to capture the entire illuminated motion path, take the trigger off-camera and fire it manually at the peak of the trick. Use a shutter speed that covers the whole action. • Good shutter speed ranges for this are typically 0.2 to 1.2 seconds - but feel free to experiment! • The athlete should wear relatively bright clothing to reflect the light better and define the trail. The main goal of this mission was to capture one perfect shot - with 🛹 @mr.boga jumping at the exact moment when trucks and cars was passing on the near lane. I precisely chose a shutter speed that would blur the motion of the vehicles, while keeping the athlete sharp. That’s why I set up the tripod with the camera on the bridge, to avoid blur from shaking hands. Surprisingly, the biggest challenge wasn’t the timings - it was the lack of traffic. One day while randomly biking past this Culture Palace, I caught a glimpse from a specific angle across the street and suddenly saw this interesting corridor framed by columns — something you can only spot from a certain distance and perspective. So, we set up a shoot with the contemporary dancer 💃 @ma.art.a - who brought the building’s exterior to life with her unique movement shapes.
