An unboxing of Bordeaux wines. We stayed at Château Mathereau just outside of Bordeaux in the lovely town of Saint-Eulalie. It is neighbored by Château de Chelivette. Both are owned by the same couple who run this vineyard as their second careers. Florence was incredibly inspirational to me, with her can do attitude, devotion to the land, and preservation of the old while also inventing new. She gave us a tour of her winery showed us the whole process and of course let us taste the yummy-ness of that “terroir”. It was a small slice of heaven for me. We bought a case to ship home. I’m sure I got the names of things wrong (like the bubbly we bought), but the memories we made sure feel right 💕 On her land is an old chapel built in 1620 by Jesuits, a building built in 18th century called The Dovecote - a sign of wealth and a way to know how many hectares of land the owner had, and a telegraph built at the end of the 18th century so the French could relay info quickly across the country. Florence’s vineyards are organic with some of the vine stalks over 80 years old. Such good memories. @chateaudechelivette
