CLASSES
Becoming a Samurai
In Japanese martial arts, and in stage & screen action, the battle has already begun before the first move is made.
Learn authentic Japanese movements, etiquette, the drawing of the sword, stance, footwork, and how to close distance. Understand how these elements create a sense of tension and anticipation in the moment before the fight.
This is a movement-based meditation that allows you to physically experience the essence of what a fight means to those in the Japanese tradition.
Using the Samurai Sword
Learn traditional sword techniques including cutting, deflecting, and guards. Experience the purpose behind each movement and the beauty of the forms that the samurai pursued.
We will explore how these movements can be used to tell a story, and how they can be adapted for a wide range of character expressions inspired by traditional performing arts such as Kabuki.
Kumite and Choreography
Learn offensive and defensive techniques through the Samurai method Kengido's partnered practice (kumite).
There are 15 official kumite forms — in this class, we will select 3 to experience in depth.
This is a choreography-based class that can be applied to scenes such as “duels” or “ambushes.”
Kengido “Master and Disciple”
The true essence of the samurai lies in their spirit. To inherit that spirit requires a lifetime of training in mind, technique, and body.
This class follows the story of Miyamoto Musashi and his adopted son, Iori, on their last day together, and the passing of the sword from master to disciple.
