Before I really dove head first down the road of abstraction, it was very important to me that I develop my technical abilities as an artist. I wanted to know that I had the ability to create anything and everything. This 24” x 46” acrylic on canvas painting is part of a triptych measuring nearly 12’ long. I called this series my “The Lost Shepherd,” and I’ll talk more about the meaning behind it in a future post sharing more from the triptych. This is the work I was heavily focused on over 20 years ago, in my late teens/early 20s, during college. I won a number of awards and scholarships for the work I was doing during those years. The dog was painted with a small round brush that was just a couple hairs, feathering in every detail. The hard-edge grid work was done with careful masking techniques, all brushwork. This triptych represents the very last works I have available from this collection.

Take your time with your art and don’t rush the process. However long it takes may be just the right amount of time to tell the story. The key exceptions are if you have a goal you really want to hit or a firm deadline for something like a show or commission. Don’t compete. Don’t compare. You are on your own pace and in your own race 🧑🎨❤️
