Join us for the Kaleidoscope Asian Classical Music Initiative World & Regional Premiere Concert, a special presentation at the 2025 College Music Society Central Chapter International Conference.
This concert features works by diverse Asian composers, including: • Hyekyung Lee (South Korea) – composer and pianist • Aida Shirazi (Iran) – acoustic and electroacoustic composer • Wai Hin Ko Ko (Myanmar) – composer and scholar • Huizhi Chen (China) – Cantonese opera and cross-genre composer • Le Chang (China) – improvisational composer and pianist • Shuqin Li (China) – composer, pianist, and educator
Performers:
Yi-Yang Chen, Dan Lori Luo, Zhengyingyue Elaine Huang, Hyekyung Lee, Craig B. Parker, Kevin Kyaw, Linlin He, Xinni Liu, Xinyue Gu, Ting-An Chiu, Oscar Erives, Ross Mosier, Szu-Chia Lin, Veerle Winkelmolen, Ruizhe Zhong, Yang Yang
Drawing from traditions such as Nuo ritual music, the Zat Taw Gyi Burmese theatrical tradition, and Cantonese opera film music, these works explore themes of resilience, love, injustice, and the boundaries between the human and spiritual realms.
The event will also feature a world-premiere screening of a mini-documentary, produced with support from The Hall Center for the Humanities. Led by Dr. David Mai (KU Film) and Dr. Yi-Yang Chen (KU Music), the film offers a deeper look into this artistic journey. The screening is free and open to the public.
The finale will bring together nine pianists from different cultural backgrounds in a six-hand performance of Dream, a collaborative piece that embodies the spirit of artistic exchange.
This concert celebrates the intersection of Eastern and Western artistic traditions, highlighting how music transcends boundaries to inspire new creative expressions.
Save the date & celebrate the transformative power of music with us! 🌏🎵

The Asian Classical Music Initiative pleased to announce that We are honored to welcome two distinguished featured artists:
Lei Liang
Distinguished Chinese-American composer, Harvard University composition doctorate, and recipient of the Rome Prize
In his presentation titled ”A Sonic Search for Home,“ Lei Liang will explore how music-making serves as a way to create, evoke and transform a sense of identity. By envisioning music collaboratively with scientists, musicians can rediscover and strengthen our connections with home. He believes ”Listening can shed new light on what home is for all of us – our cultural, spiritual, and physical home, illuminated by sound.“
Purna Bangere
Indian classical violinist, mathematician, composer, and co-founder of the ensemble Purna Loka Alongside Grammy Award recipient, violinist and conductor David Balakrishnan
Purna will present ”METARAGA SYSTEM,“ an innovative musical syntax inspired by geometric principles and empirical data drawn from Indian classical music and Western traditions. As he describes, ”The idea is to explore musical soundscapes, starting with any known genres—usually Indian classical music in my experience—and then traverse through other genres to come to musical regions which can be viewed as ‘no person’s land‘ music. A music with no geographical vantage point; a music with no east or west!“ The presentation will feature audio-visual examples and live violin performance.
We at ACMI believe that the ideas and artistic visions shared by these two outstanding featured artists will provide valuable insights for performers, educators, and researchers across the global music community. We warmly invite all interested individuals to join us.
Only FIVE days remain to apply for the 2025 ACMI Conference! Come join us!2025 KUACMI CONFERENCE Partnering with the COLLEGE MUSIC SOCIETY April 5-6, University of Kansas
