I WAS ANGRY AT THIS PLAY. I showed up the first time to see this play about 15 years ago for entertainment, not enlightenment.  The second time, though this past week—that’s when my 3rd eye opened up. See, when you walk into a story like this without historical consciousness, you risk missing the meaning But when you come prepared—when reseached  the truth of who Joe Turner was, when you understand the brutal machinery of convict leasing—then the play stops being performance and becomes prophetic👀 I found myself angry . Not the kind that destroys, but the kind that awakens foreeal. The kind that forces you to reckon with the reality that this nation built systems designed to dehumanize Black men while claiming to uphold justice.  Man.... gods to slaves. That was my tension with Joe Turner tho. Although,  gotta celebrate the artistry—the brilliance of the direction of Debbie, the power of the all-star  cast, the energy of NYC my hometown —i still  underneath this was the truth hurt. This was a historical crime that still happening TODAY  with prison labor and sentences for petty crimes. This play is not just relevant—it’s necessary everybody to go deeper and never forget it. Because we’re still living in the aftershocks of that history. The names may change, the systems may evolve, but the struggle for dignity, but the pain Still Remains.  Just like me  let your third eye awakened and learn the current pains of your people to help disturb you. Disturb you into action. Because we can't  just look at everything as entertainment and the situations don't trouble your spirit, you might  be just like me when I first saw Joe Turner,  Clueless theater goer not seeing the message😤🙏🏽 Big love to my fam Debbie Allen for bringing it to life , she's a goddess among entertainment that entertains and educates
