The Ghanaian Barbershop of the '90s and '00s, that’s where the inspiration for our next show on @orokoradio will be about. These shops can best be described as some of the first music curation spaces..Apart from getting their Sportin' wave cuts, these spaces where were many a Ghanaian millennial got introduced to aspects of Black American urban culture, particularly the RNB and Hip-Hop sound..Join us throwback and reminisce some of the sounds of the era which played on the HiFi systems that were usually present in these barbering shops.

The Ghanaian dancehall sound has a very strong influence from key predominantly Zongo communities, Nima, Newtown, and Ashaiman in particular..In Nima, there is an area - Judgement Yard - that is renowned and respected in the local Reggae and Dancehall community, but that story is for another day. Most top dancehall practitioners from this space have interfaced, been influenced, and have loyal fan bases from these communities..In our next @orokoradio transmission, we would highlight the influence of these communities on the sound, as we celebrate with our brethren who would be celebrating Eid in a couple of days.#accra #accracitynice #accraghana #dancehall

Our @orokoradio show for this month is a celebration of the life and influence of @rab_bakari.Rab was a pioneering figure of the Ghanaian 'Hiplife' sound, a fusion of the Hip Hop sound with Highlife. Having grown up, lived in, and experienced the Hip Hop culture in the 'Mecca' of New York, Rab's production techniques, DJing, and music management would set the foundations for the iconic sound which would shape the urban landscape of Ghana and eventually make this country the influential creative hub it has become..Rab passed on in March of 2022, and this show is a celebration of the music he produced, was influenced by, and the sound his influence created.
