Some moments in the ocean stay with you forever.
While stand-up paddling alone far offshore in Baja Mexico, I came across a shallow sandbank and decided to do something completely outside my comfort zone. I grabbed my camera, broke every freediving safety rule, and dove alone to see what was waiting beneath me.
What I found was this beautiful shoal of jack/trevally, circling me through the dive as if they had accepted me into their world for a few brief moments. Out there alone, far from shore, I had to overcome every fear in my head, fear of diving solo, fear of the unknown, fear of my own health condition, and honestly, the fear of traveling alone itself.
This trip almost never happened. When my dive buddy had to cancel last minute, I nearly cancelled too. Traveling alone has always triggered anxiety for me, not the flying, but the feeling of being completely on my own.
But somewhere out there in the open ocean, something shifted. This trip became a test of resilience, and I feel like I unlocked a part of myself that had been closed off for years. Maybe this journey opened a whole new chapter, a Pandora’s box of future adventures I never thought I’d have the courage to take alone.
And the ocean rewarded me with this moment.
