Raphael's "The School of Athens"
Today, I attended a lecture by Teacher Fang Yan on the relationship between Western sketching and Chinese painting techniques. It reminded me of the pencil sketch of Raphael's "The School of Athens" that I saw in September 2025 at the Ambrosiana Library in Milan (Biblioteca Ambrosiana). This is the only surviving manuscript by Raphael, while the completed fresco is in the Vatican.
The gallery has a separate exhibition hall dedicated to "The School of Athens," featuring a short film that analyzes every exquisite detail of Raphael's painting. This legendary work depicts 57 ancient Greek sages. The central figures are Aristotle and Plato. Among them, the one pointing to the sky is Plato, whose face Raphael painted as Leonardo da Vinci. Sitting on the steps with his head in his hands (not shown in the manuscript) is Heraclitus, whose face is that of Michelangelo. And most famously, when Raphael completed the painting, he included his own face among the crowd on the far right.

Check out this full-factor sketch by an American student studying in Germany.
Check out this charcoal sketch by American painter Samuel H. Crone. He painted it back in 1883 while he was studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. It's so different from the full-factor sketches you usually see back home. Just a nice change of scenery for the eyes. #honghuridgeart #tangshanartstudio #artreference #drawlife #drawdailytogether
A couple of pages from the sketchbook at the Vatican Museums studying the Belvedere Torso alongside the Miano Sketch Tour crew in Rome.
To stand before fragments that shaped Michelangelo’s imagination and try to understand them through drawing is a humbling thing.
Red chalk, worn pages, tired feet… and a lot of gratitude.
An experience like this can raise your standard for what art can be. ✨
