“The Clown”Oil painting is on view and available through @abvgallery for my solo show “Portal” 🌞
Clowns are such a fun character! They actually go back to Ancient Egypt where they performed for Pharoahs (they invented everything, didn’t they?) By the late 1800s, clowns morphed into staple performers in the American and European circus, often portraying the downtrodden “hobo” or “tramp” character. Bozo the clown and Ronald McDonald popularized the clown in the mainstream meanwhile Stephen King’s “IT” character brought about associations with darker themes.

“The Sunbaby” Oil painting is on view and available through @abvgallery (link in my description) for my solo show “Portal” 🌞
The Sunbaby plays on the idea of a sun deity, with the child being a photograph I took of a child in Panama. I really loved the idea of the sun being a child. Across many regions of the world, there exists sun deities dating back to Sumerian times. My favorite anthropomorphic rendition of a sun is the Teletubbies’ Sunbaby character when I was young, which served as the inspiration for this painting.

’The Green Boy,’ by @shumakerart reimagines her uncle’s farm helper as a mystical figure inspired by the European Green Man legend. The painting reflects the connection between humans and the land while also serving as a tribute to her mother’s native Panama and its rainforest landscapes. Through the work, Shumaker highlights the importance of nature, biodiversity, and environmental protection.
