2 hours of rolling, blissed out 90s downtempo, ambient techno / trance & triphop - a journey thru the softer, slower and dreamier edges of old club sounds
Music for the day after - ideally suited for a long walk or car / train / plane ride while the sun is rising or setting. Once again designed some visual accompaniments inspired by this , as well as lots of discogs and youtube research thru 90s ambient and chillout comps. Recorded and designed a huge 2 hour mix of some of my favourite early rave / breakbeat hardcore / jungle tracks from the first half of the 90s - tracing the evolution of hardcore into jungle
Have always been inspired by the incredible artwork of old rave tapes and hours trawling through youtube and discogs listening to low quality rips of them, still full of so much urgency and intensity despite their age- like music from another dimension, lightning bottled in these psychedelic little plastic cases. Had fun replicating the dated look of the renders on many of these old tapes and flyers and designing for cassette for the first time. Been sitting on this project for ages now so feels good to have it finally finished, and especially fitting after just spending a year in the uk where this all came from. Big uni project from this year - visual identity for a simulated exhibition and accompanying video that looks at the intersection between skateboarding, architecture and social design - how when incorporated properly into urban design skateboarding can be utilised to uniquely fight major urban issues in ways other sports can’t, revitalising and improving cities for everyone. I used the motion visualisation clip of @midfield.jks skating Woolstores I made with touchdesigner last year as a starting point for the project, incorporating the animation through the video and exhibition as a kind of visual motif to display skateboarding’s regenerative effect. Dug through loads of interesting research in the making of this, from architectural graphics and skate magazines to academic papers and was probably one of my favourite uni projects I’ve been able to make :)
Hand bound publication w acetate cover made for uni project, researching the relationship between deconstruction / postmodernist philosophy and graphic design; a design movement that’s always interested me and influenced my own practice in a heap of ways.
Was inspired by Muriel Cooper’s 1994 Information Landscapes installation and the idea of design breaking away from the structures of the printed page into a whole new digital medium for the first time thru my research - ended up building on this for a second assignment and turned the book into a mini AR installation, playing around with ideas from the book in 3D space.
Learnt a heap on both the theory and technical side of things and went down a lot of interesting rabbit holes making this 📖
Graphic work for @40th_parallel debut EP Beneath the Noise 💿 - from band tees printed at the @theshedtheshedtheshedtheshed , EP + lead single cover, and single launch tour poster. Visuals designed to look how the music sounds, and reflecting the map of themes and musical influences that have gone into the EP. Go give it a listen :) #jazzgaze
Last week I moved to London for uni, and because I’m out of physical copies of the last two zines I’ve made I’ve put them both up online for free on youtube - set to mixes I made of the music linked to each one, spanning a range of genres.
Each page is linked to a piece of music - from music that’s tied up with certain memories, music that I was trying to visualise or music by people who contributed to the zine. In the video description of each I've written briefly about how each song links to each page. Putting this all together feels like the zines are now finally complete in a full audio-visual package. swipe for some excerpts ->
They’re available in my bio for your reading and listening pleasure, and the mixes alone are on my Soundcloud if you just wanna listen :)
Design process behind new mix 💿 2 hours and 20 minutes of my favourite trance tracks from the late 90s and early 2000s, accompanied by renders I made in Blender to visualise them.
I’ve been interested for a while in early 3D from the same era and how connected it is to electronic music - forming both the look and sound of the future in the collective consciousness at the time. Trance in my head is connected to these sleek, curvy and futuristic abstract shapes very distinctive of design from the same era.
I designed a CD inspired by cover designs from the original tracks, and featuring the renders I made inside - This video shows the whole mix, render and CD design process from start to finish. Link in bio for YouTube vid with all the renders, and also for Soundcloud mix if you just wanna listen :)
