Abraham Joffe: “Last night, ‘Trade Secret’ @tradesecretfilm had its Bay Area Premiere at the DocLands @doclands Documentary Film Festival. Following the screening, I had the honour of taking part in a post-screening conversation with one of my filmmaking heroes, Louie Psihoyos. @psihoyos Louie is an extraordinary filmmaker who has literally changed the genre of documentary wildlife filmmaking with his Academy Award-winning film, ‘The Cove’. He went on to make such incredible films as ‘Racing Extinction’ and, more recently, ‘Game Changers’ and ‘The Plastic Detox’ on Netflix. His work has been so influential on my filmmaking career, and we had a wonderful discussion on stage about the making of Trade Secret. Louie said some very nice things about the film, fielding great questions from a very engaged Marin County audience. I told him on stage that I honestly don’t believe Trade Secret would exist had ‘The Cove’ never been made. ‘The Cove’ broke new ground as an investigative thriller of a wildlife film that captivated the world. As I found out last night, it has reduced the dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan by over ninety-nine percent from the period before the film was released. What an incredible example of how filmmaking CAN change the world. We can only hope that ‘Trade Secret’ can achieve even a fraction of that positive impact for polar bears. Our ultimate goal for the species is that it’s fully protected from international commercial trade and trophy hunting. The momentum the film is having towards that is very encouraging. It was wonderful to also have at the screening: Justin Lewis @justinlewisontheroad , an extraordinary cinematographer who contributed so much of the powerful Arctic footage in the film - John Baker the powerhouse head of WILDAID @wildaid - and the wonderful Costas Christ conservationist and Associate Producer of ‘Trade Secret’. I’d like to thank Louie so much for the great honour of being here last night. A huge thanks also to @oceanicpreservationsociety and @wildaid for their ongoing support as well as Jennifer Coslett Maccready for sponsoring the screening. And finally @doclands for giving such an important platform for the film.”

Polar bears are in peril. And yet - their skins are still being commercially traded. Trade Secret @tradesecretfilm exposed a hidden global trade in polar bear skins and those enabling it to persist. Now, Norway’s national broadcaster (NRK) has reported on the same reality - revealing a concealed stockpile in Bergen, and a system where many skins cannot be traced to a verified origin. And Norway’s own scientific advisors (VKM) have warned this trade may be unsustainable. Despite banning polar bear hunting in 1973, Norway remains the world’s second-largest importer of polar bear skins. At CITES COP28 in 2028, Norway has a historic opportunity to lead again. Propose Appendix I protection. End the international commercial trade. You can help urge Norways Parliament to act by visiting /norway

A polar bear marooned on a shard of floating sea ice has become a familiar emblem of climate change’s rapid transformation of the Arctic—and the planet. Yet beyond the global meltdown lies another, largely hidden, peril: a commercial trade that exploits polar bears and intensifies the risks they face. The new documentary “Trade Secret,” now on the film festival circuit, follows three unlikely allies on a mission to protect polar bears from international trade and exposes the sanctioned sale of hundreds of polar bears—a threatened species—annually on the global market for their pelts. As the investigation deepens, it uncovers a disturbing truth: Those entrusted with safeguarding polar bears may be entangled in their continued commercialization. 😮 What an evening! A packed room, a standing ovation at the end for Adam Cruise, the investigative journalist featured in the film (but really for the whole team of Trade Secret). A remarkable investigative work that lasted for 6 years, the films shows the behind-the-scene of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and its role in maintaining commercial trade of polar bears skins and trophies. 🇳🇴 Norway plays a very influential role in this trade, being the second importer of polar bear fur and trophies, just behind China. 🙏 ❤️ Many thanks to those who helped promote this memorable event. Aurora Fokus will donate 40% of the ticket sales to Trade Secret. Fint Kafé & Bar will give 10% of their sales to Trade Secret (coupons distributed to those attending the screening) which shows the local support for the total protection of polar bears worldwide. Rissa CS is very happy to have initiated and facilitated this screening, and it was an honor to welcome Dr Adam Cruise, a world-class investigative journalist. ⚠️ Rissa CS is working on a follow-up project on polar bears in Tromsø: reach out if you want to know more, we are looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to join the project. @tradesecretfilm @adamjcruise @abrahamjoffe @fint.tromso @aurorakinofokus #polarbear #polarbearconservation

Last night - on World Polar Bear Day - we screened Trade Secret @tradesecretfilm in the Arctic for the very first time – in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Two packed screenings brought more than 400 local residents into the cinema. In a community the size of Longyearbyen, that represents almost 20% of the entire adult population of Svalbard seeing the film in a single night. It was a powerful moment to share this story in a place so closely connected to the fate of polar bears. Norway protected its own polar bears from hunting in 1973, yet today the country remains the second largest importer of polar bear skins in the world. Since 2012, at least 185 polar bear skins have been imported into Norway from Canada through the international trade system. Today – 28 February, Trade Secret continues its journey with screenings in Tromsø, the Canadian premiere at the Salt Spring Film Festival in British Columbia. For Norwegians who want to help protect polar bears, you can visit: tradesecretfilm.com/norway There you’ll find simple ways to contact Norway’s Environment Minister and urge the Norwegian government to propose full protection for polar bears under CITES Appendix I, which would end international commercial trade in their skins. Thank you to SeaLegacy for supporting this impact campaign and helping bring Trade Secret to audiences across Norway. Norway helped lead the creation of the 1973 Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears. It now has the opportunity to show leadership again and help secure the strongest possible protection for this vulnerable species.

It’s World Polar Bear Day. Polar bears are still being exploited through trophy hunting and international commercial trade. Norway banned the killing of its own polar bears in 1973. Yet today it continues to allow trophy hunters to import skins from Canada - and has become the world’s second largest importer of commercially traded polar bear skins, with 185 imported since 2012. Today Trade Secret @tradesecretfilm has its Arctic premiere in Svalbard, following its Norwegian premiere in Oslo just steps from Parliament. This impact campaign is made possible through the support and partnership of SeaLegacy @sealegacy We believe Norway can show global leadership by proposing an Appendix I listing under CITES to end international commercial trade in polar bears. If you are in Norway, your voice matters. Take action: /norway
