Comfort Zones, a series of small oil paintings on panels. I NEVER make small paintings and it may be another 15 years before I do it again. But I love these little guys and I’m donating 20% of the proceeds all weekend to mutual aid support for families sheltering in place while border patrol occupies our city. Come see these babies before the show comes down. This is the final weekend of my show at @otherplans.gallery

Traditional Notions of Comfort, oil on canvas, 2025 I first came up with this title while reading an old textbook on the theory of home. The phrase struck me as an assumption men make about what women think of as comfort. I’ve thought and read a lot about domestic labor over the last few years, as a mom and as a feminist. I’ve always known it was devalued work. But the topics of home economics and domestic labor have become front page news as border patrol and ice are currently terrorizing my neighbors, making it impossible for them to keep their jobs or even leave their homes. I’ve been proud of my city and its organizers. We know why mutual aid is necessary. Fuck ice, I love you all, and everyone deserves their own notions of comfort and safety. Last week to see this show at @otherplans.gallery

Domestic Arts, 60x84, oil and flashe on canvas. “We all carry this idealized version of what a house and home should be. But there’s a vast gap between that promise and the reality of who gets to live safely inside a home and what’s promised in exchange for domestic labor. The title Home Economics pulls on threads I’ve been working with for years, about who performs domestic labor, who gets compensated, and what’s promised in return.” (Excerpt from my conversation with @jiamirkh )

A big part of my practice is building these still lifes in my studio, their own worlds that exist for maybe 15 minutes. Sometimes I’ll build 3 or 4 in a day. Each has its own language, symbols, and codes that become permanent in the paintings. But here’s the thing: I’m not just building private worlds in my studio. I’m trying to visualize what collective care looks like, what it means to prepare for disaster together, to recognize that in New Orleans, in any sinking city, any place facing climate crisis, we survive through each other. The paintings become a kind of blueprint for that. They’re about radical hope and the dissociation required to keep building in the face of collapse, yes, but they’re also about the necessity of building together, of creating networks that catch us when everything else fails. Home Furnishings, 60x84, oil and flashe on canvas. Up now at @otherplans.gallery

Thank you to @jamiattenberg and @otherplans.gallery for a perfect evening. Turns out my ideal artist talk is with a dear friend who inspires me regularly. I was so thrilled by everyone who came out to the talk, asked brilliant questions, and laughed at all the right moments 🤍

My solo exhibition Home Economics opens tonight! 5-8pm @otherplans.gallery “Objects that are cherished in this way really are born of an intimate light, and they attain to a higher degree of reality than indifferent objects, or those that are defined by geometric reality. For they produce a new reality of being, and they take their place not only in an order but in a community of order. From one object in a room to another, housewifely care weaves the ties that unite a very ancient past to the new epoch. The housewife awakens furniture that was asleep.”—Gaston Bachelard, La poétique de l’espace, or The Poetics of Space (1964), p. 68. Thank you to @jiamirkh for choosing this text as an introduction, and for the interview in advance of the show. Thank you to @emilyrwilkerson for the opportunity. Hope to see many of you tonight! Exhibition runs through Dec 14th, with a talk with @jamiattenberg on October 30th.
