Many believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. In reality, Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16, which is a much larger national holiday.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, where Mexican forces defeated French troops. The battle was a morale-boosting victory, but France ultimately won the war, temporarily taking over Mexico City, which diminishes the "celebratory" nature of the date. Mexicans focus their national patriotism on September 16th, which commemorates the beginning of the war of independence from Spain in 1810.
Now, the massive party, food, and drink-driven holiday known in the U.S. is largely a marketing construct that gained momentum in the 1960s and 80s to promote Mexican culture, according to Time and ABC News.
