I’m home, back on the ranch after a lovely weekend spent at the lake, simply enjoying the cool waters and lovely weather. I also spent some time at the county fair with my cousin, meeting as many of the sheep and goats I could. I’m hopeful that next year we can bring on some goats, so I enjoyed the chance to see what breeds are raised on the lands here.

Vestiges of the summer’s bloom still linger on. Another part of my walks I try to incorporate is identifying at least one or two of the many plants we have growing here. This one, Yerba Santa, is well adapted to our arid summers— and is a key plant in rewilding damaged and disturbed lands, so I’m quite happy to see it on ours.

I love the textures of this plant, both to see and touch. I believe it is turkey mullein, which grows bountifully over the landscape here. Fascinatingly, it was used to stun fish by the indigenous peoples here in California. Each walk I take I love to stop and look at their soft mounding figures.
