Here we take that same MGA night vision binocular that survived the airplane drop testing and drop it from a truck onto asphalt at 55mph. This housing is tough, much tougher than tubes and lenses can be expected to survive.
This is the second round of drop testing on the MGA from an airplane at a low altitude pass, and then at 1000 feet. For the first round I cheated a little by using lens covers that held the optical pods together, which strengthened the unit against damage. This time we tested with individual lens covers and once again the MGA survived without damage.
In the first round the unit impacted directly on the top, on the dovetail, from the 1000 ft height. That was ideal for survival. This time it impacted from the side at a rearward angle, and still did not cause damage.
We drop tested the AB NightVision MGA from an airplane first at low altitude, then at 1000ft, and it survived both with no damage. This was a initial prototype housing that was uncoated aluminum, but only differs from final production in the placement of the lanyard attachment points. Given the ridiculousness of the testing, it was built with throw-away lenses and junk tubes, but fully functional. From a safety standpoint: while camera angle makes it look like the high altitude drop was aimed at the buildings, we were off to the side over the fields, the forward speed and fall time was factored in, and the unit landed in the center of the large field as intended. It is safe to say that the MGA can handle the bumps of nightly use.
We had the pleasure of going to AB Night Vision and meeting with the owner Adam Barker. He gave us a behind the scenes look at what is involved when it comes to manufacturing night vision housings and accessories, as well as gave us a sneak peak of the RNVG-A manual gain that will be hopefully released by Q2 of next year. Here is a pallet of future RNVG optical pods. We billet machine from 7075-T6 aluminum. Fun fact: 7075-T6 has higher strength than the steel used in most rifle barrels. All part of what makes the RNVG binoculars so strong.
Here are all the colors of RNVG that we currently offer, with an OD Green MOD-3B thrown in just for grins. From left to right is Black, Flat Dark Earth, OD Green, and Coyote Tan. We currently have all these available ready to ship, so contact your dealer if you are interested in a new unit. You won't find a tougher binocular. The 7075 aluminum the RNVG is made from is 36% stronger than most common steel. Careful design also means it is one of the lighter units available.
