We are making a poetry album y’all. I got this song in the middle of the night after the inauguration. I was surprised by the first lyrics that came out “love all over. Let it in.” Wanted to change them at first to something that reflected the horror I felt about this historical moment. But then I realized how incredibly Black it is to declare love in the face of war and violence. And so in line with the tradition that raised me, I declare love. Love all over in spite of and in the face of all the shit! There’s a link to my new sound cloud in my bio if you wanna see more songs/poems. With love

Fell in love with a song this morning and it made me think of this poem from my book Because You Were Mine. Not always sure what I have faith in and still… WE’VE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH bull headed beautiful and black you be a galaxy infinite and dusted with stars lean into the absence the dark obstinate abyss be a wormhole pull everything in even when your grandmothers didn’t know what to pray for they still prayed for you if you believe in nothing believe in you sing to the child in the well sing until she unfurls her fist until she sings too get her out take her with you straighten your back beloved nobody was ever promised they’d live

I’ve been reading Wanda Coleman for the first time and she has quite literally been saving my life. No idea how I went so long without her work but I’m grateful to have found it and high key mad at all my teachers for not putting it in front of me sooner. #wandacoleman

“as if we have come to the end
of a long contracted shaft  consuming bitterness like rinds
we’ve learned to eat without the meat”  Fun to see past Breezy's brain learning to grapple with the lyric poem. Read the rest of the fragment on Patreon 😘

Found this poem draft paying homage to my ancestors and all they made it thru. These days I find myself constantly saying “if they could survive that, I can survive this” the full draft is on my Patreon! link in bio 12/18/17 *excerpt* in the tradition of those who stole away of the river waders
the troubled the desperate but still running
in the tradition of those who stayed   who back bent
who back whipped   who back broken fluttered
their lashes to listen at the cicadas  the bullfrog
and owls calling to each other with the want of unchained beings

First Draft (final draft on Patreon) 4/26/17 Alternative Facts -for Trayvon Martin you move through the night like a spirit dancer shadow boxer the ground rumbles beneath your feet. you are like a benevolent God strolling through the suburbs to see about your people here you say skittles and sweet tea and the moon glittering on your teeth is the bright glimmering of an angels wings you were always an other worldly thing. (*) you stayed high as birds wings you always new you aught to fly always new your feet were too good for the ground when the thick necked brute came at you you were the thug they always dreamed of the thug their mouths got wet for no scrawny boned teen but a muscular black god *you kept your hood up to shield the world from your glory

There’s a poem on the last slide!!! Religion really is such a rich source of trauma isn’t it. I’ve spent the last couple years throwing off and reclaiming god over and over again. And continue to try to find a way to navigate, understand and express my relationship to the divine. Full essay, poem and song on my Patreon. Link in bio. Leave a tip on Venmo if you like what you see and want to support! @brionnejanae #religion #god #kink
