Poem: “Hanging by Roots”
A tree once tall, proud in the sun,
Now leans, its roots undone.
Nigeria sways in dusty air,
A soul misplaced, a hollow stare.
Once rooted deep in earth and song,
Now echoes where the roots went wrong.
Class carved cracks, and faith drew lines,
While books fed lies in measured rhymes.
The boots of soldiers tramped the soil,
And turned our truth to rust and toil.
Now dangling still by threads unseen,
We chase a dream that might have been.
Who are we now, without the root?
A people numbed, a distant flute.
No anthem stirs, no flag is flame—
Just drifting leaves, and borrowed names.
Yet still it hangs, not wholly dead,
Some stubborn root, some dream unsaid.
And maybe if we kneel to tend,
This tree might find its soul again.
