GISTEREN IS VERDWENEN | 2024
When I listened to “Sleep Well Beast” by The National, a wave of melancholy washed over me. From this, a new film idea surfaced: a final farewell to my inner child. At this moment, I find myself in a phase of life where I must find a balance between my own inner child and adulthood. Finding this balance is essential to becoming emotionally mature. It’s like stepping out of a child’s magical world to lead an adult life. Through this journey emotional connections and cherished friendships provide support. This sparked me to write the script.
During the writing process, I decided to shoot the film on 16mm in black and white. Film is the only medium that can create the gray, dark, yet mysterious atmosphere I aimed for. When I saw a dehydrated tree on set preparing for summer, I felt recognition and knew it symbolized the ‘drained’ feeling of the protagonist. “Yesterday is Gone” explores the themes of growing up, emotional growth, and cherishing precious relationships.

Een liefdevolle tiener worstelt met het vinden van een identiteit. Met meerdere ongewone acties ondergaat hij een make-over in een afgesloten appartement. Alleen diep van binnen schuilt er een monster in hem wachtend op het moment waar hoop omslaat in wanhoop. Neemt het schuilende monster de overhand of lukt het hem om een eigen identiteit te vinden en te luisteren naar zijn eigen innerlijke kracht?
A lovelorn teenager struggles to figure out his identity. With several uncommon actions, he endures a make-over in a foreclosed flat. Only deep inside, a monster is lurking inside him waiting for the moment where hope turns to despair. Will the lurking monster take over or will he manage to find his own identity and listen to his own inner strength?

Als je bij Rotterdam Centraal naar beneden loopt, richting de metro, staat er een quote op de muur van Erasmus: "Ruimte scheidt de lichamen, niet de geesten". Stel je voor... Je staat in een grote lege kamer, helemaal alleen, niemand is er maar toch kan je je nog gevangen voelen. Alle negatieve gedachtes dat door je hoofd krioelen, creëren een storm van wikken en wegen. Alleen die storm vind zich plaats in jouw hoofd. Het is jouw perceptie. Niet de buitenwereld. Niet anderen.
Gisteren is de film "De Storm van Wikken en Wegen" in première gegaan tijdens een live screening. Vanaf vandaag is de film online via mijn website te zien. Ook staat de korte film op vimeo. Link in mijn bio. Check it out!

Op 28 mei draait @gevleugelde_film opnieuw in @lantarenvenster om 19:00. Na de geslaagde editie van vorig jaar tijdens de Maand van de Filosofie wordt Gevleugelde nu vertoond tijdens het evenement van @kinokabaal . Het wordt een avond waarin belangrijke maatschappelijke thema’s belicht worden van getalenteerde filmmakers.
Toen ik begon met het maken van de film wist ik niet zeker of de film wel door genoeg mensen gezien zou worden. Nu, anderhalf jaar later, kijk ik terug op de tour die de film heeft afgelegd en ben ik onwijs dankbaar. Het is mooi dat de film nog een keer op het witte doek te zien is.

During Rotterdam Art Week, @abelvanessen and I will be exhibiting @deachtertuin
Abel will be screening his short film Gevleugelde, which centres around the themes of loneliness and the importance of connection and friendship. I was honoured to do most of the photography for this beautifully themed movie, including this poster.
The film is fully shot on analog, as is the photography.
Besides pictures on film, instant polaroids (600) were also used to capture memory and imperfection throughout the film. We’ve bundled these moments into a collaborative artwork for our exhibition: ‘Het Goede Leven’. The work captures the memories of the characters and reminds us of the beauty of life through connection.
Besides our collaborative work and the film screening, I will be exhibiting two self-portraits which will be on sale during the showcase. Both these works are heavily inspired by transformational processes and wonder.

Adelio, a dreamy loner, sees little meaning in life. Until one day he meets Ravi, who takes him on a turbulent journey through the city and helps him rediscover the beauty of living. But when Ravi suddenly disappears, does Adelio still hold on to that newfound beauty? Or does he lose himself once more in the spiral of solitude?
The screening will be moderated by Film070, a Hague based film club for cinephiles. And after the screening, you can vote for the ROOTS Audience Award.
