The Wine Box is conceptual un-built project for an adaptive reuse project in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone that would transform a 22,082-square-foot site into a compact, highly activated marketplace venue for culinary arts, creative production, and social gathering. Constructed from repurposed shipping containers, the architecture establishes a flexible framework in which the built form defines edges rather than traditional enclosed interiors. The containers are strategically positioned to reinforce the street frontage while preserving permeability through the site, fostering a sense of visual continuity that reflects the industrial and informal character of the surrounding district. Although this proposed project and use of this site will not be built, the concept shown here is a case study focused on adapting, activating and infilling a former underutilized light industrial zoned urban lot.
