ABC Cafe is a Cantonese-style diner that opened in Overland Park in 2010, making it one of the original Cantonese restaurants in the Kansas City metro area. Current owners, Derrick and Joanne, assumed ownership of the restaurant from Derrick’s Aunt Cindy three years ago, and the couple set about modernizing the menu to cater to diners tastes (lots of vegetarian options as well as meat dishes) while retaining all the old standbys for diner loyalists.
We started out with dim sum — small plates shared for the table.
🥢Siu Mai: A pork and shrimp meatball wrapped in a dumpling skin
🥢 Seven Flavor Mushrooms: Tempura battered shiitake mushrooms topped with spices and cilantro
🥢 XO Sauce Turnip Cakes: Fried turnip cake cubes topped with jalapeños, scallions, garlic and xo sauce
🥢 Shrimp Wontons in chili sauce topped with scallions and cilantro
For entrees, we chowed down on:
🥢 Traditional Cantonese Beef Chow Fun
🥢 Salt and Pepper Flounder — a specialty! Chefs remove meat from the fish and serve the fried fish pieces atop the whole fried fish. Served with bok chow and jalapeños.
🥢 Guo Bao Rou - thinly sliced sweet and sour pork, served crispy fried Northern Chinese style
🥢 Cantonese Beef Stew Hotpot
We finished our meal with Xi mi lu — a rich, creamy peanut-butter-flavored, tapioca dessert soup.
