Cannon by Australian cartoonist Lee Lai (@_leelai ) has won the 2026 Stella Prize, a literary award for women and nonbinary authors worth $60,000. It’s the first time a graphic novel has won the prize in its 14-year history. Lai says she’s “shocked” that a major literary prize has gone to a graphic novel, a relatively under-recognised form in Australia, and hopes the prize is viewed as “a win for the Australian comics community”, which has supported her throughout her career. Confined 17 is the 17th annual exhibition showcasing the work of First Nations artists with lived experience of incarceration in Victoria. The 500 or so artworks, which include paintings, weaving, ceramics and carved emu eggs, address themes of kinship, healing, ancestral stories and life journeys. Organised by The Torch, which supports First Nations people in jail through art, culture and income from art sales, all exhibition proceeds go directly to artists who have been released. For those still incarcerated, 70 per cent is withheld to help them integrate back into the community after they complete their jail terms. #ABCNewsBreakfast

Richard Lewer has won the $100,000 Archibald Prize for his portrait of fellow artist and Pitjantjatjara Elder Iluwanti Ken. In his artist statement, Lewer said he spent time with Ken - who is also a finalist in this year’s Wynne Prize - at her studio Tjala Arts in Amata, in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. “Being on Country together deepened my understanding of her presence and the responsibilities she carries,” he wrote. Ken is known for her large scale, monochromatic ink on paper drawings depicting hunting Tjilpul (eagles). Read more at ABC News through the link in our bio. Lewer described her as having an “immense, quiet authority” and praised the “urgency” of her paints.
