The fastest way to strengthen Europe's energy security? Use less energy.
Our division president, Tuomo Hoysniemi was in Brussels at the EU Implementation Dialogue on Energy Efficiency, speaking with Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen and stakeholders to make exactly that case.
Every unit of energy not used is a unit not imported, not generated, not transported. The technology to do this exists today. Ir is proven, available, and fast to deploy.
So what needs to happen? Our three asks:
1) Make "Energy Efficiency First" a real investment principle. Not a slogan — a binding decision-making lens across industry and infrastructure.
2) Focus public support on returns and speed
3) Scale what already works — now. The numbers speak for themselves:
→ Motor‑driven systems ≈ 65–70% of EU industrial electricity demand
→ Upgrading to IE3 motors ≈ 25 TWh/year saved (≈ two‑thirds of Denmark’s electricity consumption)
→ Adding variable speed drives = 140 TWh freed per year (≈ 6% of EU demand) — zero new power plants needed
→ Payback time: 1-3 years. Sometimes months.
Europe has the technology. It needs to close the implementation gap. ABB is here to help make that happen.
