On a quick trip to St. Louis I had the chance to swing through Tower Grove park. These historic pavilions are in the process of being meticulously restored and WoodEpox is playing a key part. Fun to see up close, in-person.
Bradford House, Duxbury. We restored this front entrance where the flashing had failed, was back pitched, and allowing water ingress. We carefully repaired the moldings, using CPES, @abatron_uc liquid wood and wood epoxy as the filling agent. A local millwork shop fabricated some additional rope moulding, and all the flat stock was red cedar. Phil did remove the clapboards above, reflashed, added shingle tips for a forward pitch, and topped with copper flashing with an edge “kick out “, to keep water from running down the face. As with all exterior trim work, we used stainless fasteners.
This is a stunning front entrance exemplifying classic Federal architecture. The interior is one of finest I have seen, preserved from that period, with much original paint.

A little fretwork magic
*
I needed to replace a few missing spindles on my antique fretwork.
*
I made a silicone putty mold and cast a few from @abatron_uc Wood Epox.
*
Once they are stained you will never know their secret.
*
Interesting fact: the originals were turned from 1 long piece of wood, including the dowel part.
*
And I finally have a little chair to sit on and enjoy this view.

Replicating missing spindles on an antique colonnade and fretwork set.
*
I was initially going to hire a woodturner, but my favorite go to guy moved a few years ago, then retired.
*
Not to worry. I got this crazy idea to use @abatron_uc Wood Epox to replicate the spindles by first creating a silicone mold.
*
I'm a huge fan of Abatron products and this project has been a success beyond my wildest dreams. Wood Epox is very versatile. It can be sanded and stains too.
*
I can't wait to replicate the rest of the missing spindles and install this beautiful colonnade and fretwork set.

I got to talking shop with another window person on here and the conversation turned to the merits of various epoxies for window repairs. Thought I’d do a little experiment, though I’m not sure how empirical it was or what it proves…
The first of these is a very popular and highly regarded two-part epoxy in the boatbuilding world, with just enough filler added to make forming it into a ball more or less manageable. I use this stuff all the time as a glue on Toroa. But when you mix part A and part B it becomes plastic, definitely doesn’t stand in for wood all that well, and definitely doesn’t handle impact…
The second is Abatron which I use to repair rot or fill small areas of missing wood on window sash where replacing a whole or partial rail or stile isn’t cost effective, isn’t in the budget, or on projects where I’m trying to keep as much original material as possible.
It can be mixed with the liquid version of the same product to make any consistency and when it cures it’s about the same density as wood, so it can be machined, chiseled, sanded and behaves about like Pine, rather than plastic. It’s shockingly strong stuff.
I was surprised by both of these under the same conditions… how quickly one turned into microplastics and how quickly the other damaged my asphalt.

Some of my favorite before and after pictures. They would be better if you could see the step where LiquidWood was applied....but the application of WoodEpox, the sandability and the painted finish are really on display.
