“I am a product of both my mother’s homeland, the fertile crescent, a land of olives and pomegranates, and American culture, like cabbage patch dolls. The overgrowth of cabbage in this patch in Lebanon reminded me of the quinnessential Cabbage Patch Kid doll, my own version of course. Feda Eid: Made in USA, صنع في أمريكا,” at @abakusprojects has been extended through October 26! Through upcycled fabrics, found objects, and heirloom jewelry, Eid reimagines scenes from the Levant in striking self-portraits that draw on a red, white, and blue palette. Her work explores Muslim Arab identity while confronting the orientalist gaze of 19th- and early 20th-century European photographers, whose images she references and reclaims. Concurrent with the show, Abakus Projects is hosting a mutual aid print sale, offering two prints to help raise money for Cactus Mutual Aid, a Boston-based grassroots fundraiser. “The first image I created for this series, ‘Artificial Sweetener’ features a fabric rose shoved in my mouth. The rose, a symbol of heritage and heirlooms, is also the official flower of the US. During the time period of the “Muslim Ban” I found myself feeling that my identity was being spoken for, like so many Muslims in America. As a product of my heritage, ethnicity, faith, upbringing, and environment, I never wanted to be restricted or defined based on any one aspect of my identity. Big thanks to @bostonartreview , who’ve included our Feda Eid exhibition in their list of New England exhibitions to catch this fall. In her writeup BAR editor Jameson Johnson writes, “Coming of age in the US post-9/11, through the 2017 Muslim Ban, and now as a vocal advocate for Palestinian solidarity, Eid places her body or the bodies of other marginalized peoples in the center of the frame in bold resistance. Here, for the first time, Made in USA is shown alongside selections from the Mohammed B. Alwan collection, a forty-year archive of 4,500 photographs from across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Levant. “As a first generation immigrant I often think about the lands that I occupy and the ways in which I benefit from the deeply violent foundations of ethnic cleansing, genocide, and enslavement through which this country was founded. Colonial borders that impacted the communities I come from led to a diaspora of South West Asian and North African (SWANA) refugees and immigrants. Corn, an “American” staple, provided sustenance to early colonizers, yet it too is a product of migration from the maize plant brought 7,000 years ago from South America, whose lands and indigenous communities are also impacted by colonial borders. The scarf in this image is a keffiyeh in the Levant, worn by farmers and village folk to protect their heads from the hot sun and equally worn during customary celebrations. It became a symbol of resistance during the British occupation of Palestine and after the Israeli occupation and 1948 Nakba (also known as The Palestinian Catastrophe) as farmers wrapped their heads/faces to conceal their identities to resist oppressors. “When I had created this outfit I kept having visions of this woman outside the window. The mashlah (cloak) I am wearing I made from an old pink tablecloth, gold trim and braided string I had upcycled from an old bag. The black and metallic floral abaya (dress) underneath was my mom’s from Lebanon. The metallic diamond shapes symbolized these portals to the past, present and future. I had a bag of antique silver-plated utensils I had thrifted and this old basket and I started to thread them onto it with some clear string in my stash. The utensil face veil is reminiscent of the veils worn by Levantine Bedouin women that were handmade with metal coins, generational hand me downs and other collected items. The veil serves as a symbol of identity, armor and protection, the utensils tools of consumption and creation.
