5 years ago, a white āstrayā showed me the courtesy most humans donāt:
He dropped me to my door, only to race away to eat the food Iād gone downstairs to leave for him and 4 other dogs.
He never got his fair share. It never stopped him from dropping me home first.
I didnāt adopt Mayo. Mayo adopted me. Along with my parents, my aunt, my dearest friends and basically anyone who crossed his path. Recently I had to register him not out of love but out of fear.
Heās never peed inside the house. Never broken anything. Never bitten anyone. Trusted me implicitly even if I am getting him painful vaccines. He independently goes down to do his job and comes back.
Often on his jaunts around the colony, heās been attacked by people who own āpedigreedā dogs just because he is a āstrayā. Hit by cruel children who have nothing better to do. Struck on the back by bikers with sticks so badly he developed a lump for months. Heās scared but it doesnāt stop him from loving people.
Mayo is my constant source of joy ā in times good and bad. When I was sick, friends didnāt come to visit, but he lay by my bed every single day, and followed me everywhere to check on me.
He keeps me safer than my colony committee heads whose main interest is in building mandir instead of installing much-needed security cameras and cleaning drains.
He chases away lizards but doesnāt kill them because he knows I am a little scared of them but donāt want to harm them. And snuffles into my bed every night for 10 minutes to tell me he loves me before humbly making his way down to his bed. He is the perfect partner-in-crime for any midnight snack.
He is not educated, cannot speak, yet he has more love and wisdom than most humans.
And guess whatā¦ every dog these delinquents want to get off the streets is. Just. Like. Mayo. All they want is a little love, some dignity. And if not that, just not to be disturbed.
We are the virus spreading and destroying lives, not our dogs. Stop being cruel. Create better systems instead.
