Screen test for this latest puppet. Turns out it’s hard a hell to light, frame, queue audio, and sync puppet movements when you literally can’t see anything. But that’s why it’s a screen test and not a film!
Anyway, I don’t think I need to say a whole lot about the inspiration behind this character, but I will say that this was a lot of fun in a really nihilistic way. I had more monologue to add, but indeed to save it for the project this will eventually land in. More on that another time.

Chair part two: painting! Getting a set piece to look right is often as important as the characters we watch. Being a prop guy, I’m taking this as an opportunity to imbue these miniatures with some personality. Hope you guys like! Can’t wait to see it in action when the time comes.

Was originally going to try and design a complicated way to puppeteer the head for this… and then I remembered servo motors are cool! Using my servo tester to puppeteer the head with a new micro-servo worked on literally the first try!

To start the year off right I’m adding some mobility to my rat guy! As usual I don’t have quite everything fully worked out yet, and I do A LOT of figuring it out as I go. In case the video doesn’t make it obvious (I’m sure it doesn’t) I’m planning to get a servo motor under the chair to get the head movement activated. I’ll be using more traditional methods for arm and mouth movements. Anyway, in the spirit of the new year— try lots of stuff, get out of your comfort zone, and most importantly DONT BE AFRAID TO SUCK. Enjoy!

Part 1 of working on this chair set piece for this rat guy. This is a build leading up to a paint job, just like the rat itself (although more on that later). Fun fact: this fabric is a holdover from making masks during Covid! Now it’s for the butt of an unfriendly rat man. Ain’t life something?

Been a while! Between a crazy schedule recently and some delays in other parts of the production on my current short “The Skeleton Curse,” I decided to get the ball rolling on my next build for my next short. All I can say about it at the moment is that it’s definitely inspired by the sounds in the walls when you live in a building as old as mine!

Super stoked about this. I don’t really know how to use fusion360, so there was a lot of yelling at the computer, and I did have to make an adjustment and partial reprint, but I’m extremely proud of this motor cover/armature guide. Almost ready to slap this thing in front of a camera. Still a lot more stuff to do for the rest of the piece, though!
