Installing ‘Live Culture Force 1s’ at @stlartmuseum for the upcoming ‘The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century’ exhibition showing August 19, 2023 - January 1, 2024 In 2021, I was introduced to a movement called Live Culture ( @liveculturestl ) through it’s creator Domo ( @justdjdomo ). I met him and he had such an amazing inspiration on me as he hosted these events called floriginals which gave underground hiphop dancers, and others, opportunities from all around the city (and out) to come together regularly. Super inspired by his energy, I wanted to continue working with him. In July 2022, I had the opportunity to be in service to him and his movement by creating 4 pieces for his 2022 annual event, FloFest, at big top hosted by @kranzbergarts . Live Culture Force 1s we’re one of these pieces created in spirit of Hip Hop and the Live Culture movement. I’m excited to be back in my hometown installing this piece in a place I’ve always dreamed of showing my art. Shoutout to SLAM and BMA for putting together such a dope exhibition celebrating Hip Hop. If you’re in the city while it’s up, come check it out! #theculture #aaronfowler #n2existence #slam #domofresh #liveculture #stlouisartmuseum #baltimoremuseumofart

Thank you to Andrew Paul Woolbright @andrewwooolbright at @brooklynrail for the review of Aaron Fowler: RELEASE, on view at the gallery through August 15. “Aaron Fowler’s RELEASE at Anton Kern Gallery clarifies the motivation that underlies the artist’s inveterate use of materials. The current exhibition shows us that the car bumpers the artist has been working with over the last several years relate to a ritual practiced by the Fowler family of releasing balloons after a loved one passes. The reality expressed within this acceptance of loss contextualizes Fowler’s practice through the specific valence of memorial, compressing remembrance into compacted form. The salvaged materials that Fowler reconditions have always been intertwined with bodies, suggesting that within the beautiful wreckage and debris our bodies are material aide-memoires, reaching for what can no longer be accessed”. Read the full article at the link in our bio. #aaronfowler #antonkerngallery #release @aaronfowlerstudio

Family Release, 2025 Mixed media on panel, polyptych of nine panels 112 x 432 x 18 inches (284.5 x 1097.3 x 45.7 cm) On this day in 2001, I went through one of the hardest losses of my life when I lost my little cousin Derion in a car accident. That day also became the moment I discovered the power of what art can do — drawing him helped me heal through that pain. It gave me space to cry when I thought about him being gone, to laugh remembering him beating me so bad at Mario Kart on Nintendo 64 at only 6 years old, and to sit with the frustration of wishing I could have stopped them from getting in that car. It made me appreciate the times we had — good, bad, and everything in between. Love you forever, DP. ❤️ I made this piece to celebrate Derion. It’s based on a photo taken by @erindesmond during a balloon release my family and I did in 2020 to honor 19 years since his passing, and also inspired by the balloon release room I created at the @kranzbergarts in 2022. So many hands went into creating this one — big love to the whole studio team: Ma @msneenee03 , Gabriel @gabriel_gyat_wimmer , Yashawa @alkemyfood999 , Nu @pazzhaddaa , Lee Kratzer @leekratzer , Eric Shultis @ericshultis , Liv @callmeliv , Quinn @qbricenoart , Paint by Josh @paintbyjosh , Taylor Deed @taylorthemirror , Brian Kirkwood @bryanjosephkirkwood @artmovementla . It’s the final week to see RELEASE, my solo exhibition with @antonkerngallery at 16 East 55th Street, New York, NY. On view until August 15, Monday–Friday, 10 AM–6 PM. “When I am tested, I will come forth as gold. ” Job 23:10 RELEASE is both a mirror of Fowler’s transfiguration, and an invitation for audiences to let go of what no longer serves them, so they too may be transformed. The exhibition takes its title from a family ritual: the release of balloons to honor the passing of loved ones. The largest work in the show, Family Release, a thirty-six foot long painting, depicts a large group during this act, anchoring the exhibition in a gesture that becomes a structure through which Fowler explores mourning, remembrance, and transformation. Re-approaching work that began in an unhealed space during the height of the pandemic, Fowler uses found materials: grief, childhood trauma, recycled car parts, clothing, and household items, to reassemble both himself and his compositions. Through the process of examining and excavating his own internal landscape, Fowler seeks to inspire audiences to release a cry that has been suppressed for too long, clearing space for vulnerability, sharing, and connection. Fowler’s collection is a reminder that release is a prerequisite for growth. Only when our storage is emptied can we create space for Beauty to take root and thrive. This is not a story of trauma. This is a story of alchemy. A story of hope. A story of healing. RELEASE is a reminder that even the heaviest burdens can become as light as balloons when we choose to let go. Fowler’s latest collection frames this process not as an ending, but as an opening: a space in which grief and reflection give way to realignment and renewal. —Monique Mitchell @mnqmtchll

Me, E, + Beauty, 2025 Mixed media on panel, triptych 96 x 145 x 6 inches (243.8 x 368.3 x 15.2 cm) This is for you, Beauty. You came into this world on a divine mission—to put me and your mother on our proper paths, which meant going our separate ways. Not to give us what we wanted, but what we needed. You saved my life. You made me a father—not just to you, but to myself. Around this time, we would’ve been getting ready to celebrate your first birthday. A Leo, just like me and your mama. So in this Leo season, I honor you. Happy Heavenly First Birthday. Daddy loves you forever. To anyone who has experienced miscarriage or the loss of a child in any way—we celebrate your little ones too. They still deserve to be honored. They’re still with you, always, in angelic form. 🕊️ This piece was started before the pandemic—without the middle blue panel, which now holds Beauty. It sat in storage for years, moving in a different direction, or what I thought it wanted to be. About four months ago, I returned to it from a place of deeper healing and growth. That’s when I realized Beauty was the missing piece. I was also blessed to spend time in Rome this past year, where I became drawn to the cherubs and angels in Renaissance paintings and ceiling frescos—symbols of God’s presence. I didn’t know it at the time, but all of that would lead me to painting Beauty! Now on view at Anton Kern Gallery @antonkerngallery win NYC through August 15 as part of my solo exhibition RELEASE

CMac, 2025 Acrylic, oil, sculpting epoxy, uniforms, and pins on hot tub cover 108 x 91 x7 inches (274.3 x 231.1 x 17.8cm) Today is my stepdad CMAC’s heavenly birthday. It’s been 5 years since he passed, and it’s still one of the hardest losses I’ve ever experienced. I was blessed to grow up with two fathers—my biological dad Alvino and my stepdad, Corey Smith aka CMAC, who was in my life from the time I was a baby. CMAC had the biggest heart. He was all about bringing people together, always putting family first—humble but also the life of the party. He got me my first job, which kept me out of the streets and ultimately saved my life. So many memories, so much love, so much music. I started this portrait just a few days after he passed—I had to. On my way to the studio, I found a hot tub cover and knew it would be the surface for the painting. I painted him in his airport work uniform because every time I flew back to St. Louis, he was the one waiting to greet me. And every time I left, he’d walk me to the gate to send me off. When I first started the painting, the grief and trauma were still raw. A couple months ago, I finally returned to it from a more healed place and was blessed to finish it. Love you forever, CMAC. 💛 Now on view at Anton Kern Gallery @antonkerngallery win NYC through August 15 as part of my solo exhibition RELEASE

RELEASE, 2025 Car bumpers, seatbelts, screws, afro wigs, mirror, foam, acrylic, oil, vinyl, paper, string, and sculpting epoxy on wood support 80 x 70 x 28 in (203.2 x 177.8 x 71.1 cm) This piece started as a drawing I made in Brussels earlier this year while making music with my brother Peter @peter_emmanuilov . I had taken a season off from the studio and was struggling to translate what I was feeling in the music the way I truly felt it inside. That drawing became a way to manifest the kind of emotional release I hadn’t yet reached in sound. I didn’t expect it to grow into this piece, but here it is: RELEASE. Now on view at Anton Kern Gallery @antonkerngallery in NYC through August 15 as part of my solo exhibition RELEASE. Big shoutout to Gabriel @gabriel_gyat_wimmer for carving the mouth and to the whole studio team who helped bring this to life: Ma @msneenee03 , Yashawa @alkemyfood999 , Nu @pazzhaddaa , Lee Kratzer @leekratzer , Eric Shultis @ericshultis , Liv @callmeliv , Quinn @qbricenoart , Paint by Josh @paintbyjosh , Taylor Deed @taylorthemirror , Brian Kirkwood @bryanjosephkirkwood @artmovementla
