not all apolitical people are the same. some are apathetic to politics because of comfort, and some are apathetic because of survival. this is a video breaking down these two types of people and how to engage with them on politics if you want to! not every interaction has to be political, and sometimes it may not be worth it based on the context. how do you talk with apolitical people in your life? feel free to comment what’s worked for you below!

sometimes it’s hard to navigate an organizing group as a new person showing up for the first time. who do i talk to if interested in this, what do i need to do to be able to do that, and so on. there are many practical steps that organizing groups can take to create a good first impression for new people so they feel encouraged to come back, plug in, and become a member. what are some things that your organizing group does to new people to stick around? comment below!

our neighborhoods aren’t just for entertainment and consumption! what are some important political things happening in your local community, and are there any other sources you go-to to find out about what’s happening?
with stress from work, layoffs, exams and projects in school, it’s easy to lose any pulse we have on what’s happening in our neighborhood. but the more alienated we are from our day to day environment, the more surprising and unstoppable any “bad changes” may be, and the harder it will be for “good changes” to happen

it’s inevitable that while organizing, we will face setbacks, losses, defeats, and bad times. that’s why we need mindsets, frameworks, activities, that we can fall back on to pick us back up for another day. this video has 5 things that i do to pick myself back up that can be done solo or with an organizing group and comrades. what are some things that you do to pick yourself up specifically after a loss or setback related to political or community organizing? comment below!

we join a political organizing group or community organizing group because we have a shared vision, but we’ll be bringing our unique life experiences with us. this affects how much stress we can handle, and how we respond to stress when it’s outside our window of tolerance.
how do you respond when the stress is above your level within an organizing group (fight, flight, freeze, fawn)?
have you seen interactions like the ones listed in the video play out in your own organizing group?
what can your group do together so that more time is spent building and less time is spent responding to stress?

many people i talk to who are interested in organizing are concerned about how they’re “not qualified.” reasons can range from they haven’t read karl marx, to they didn’t major in politics, to being introverted, to not having any prior community organizing experience. it’s ironic given that most organizers i know also don’t have any or most of those qualifications.
but one thing that can actually make it harder to be involved in political organizing is being too people-pleasing. organizing involves getting people on board to fight for gains from people in charge. that involves asking people to show up, and also involves some discomfort when trying to win something from your manager, landlord, local politician, etc. if you prioritize how the current people in power are feeling, you might dilute your demands or actions, and receive crumbs instead of loaves.

seeing ragebait can be fun occasionally but then it pops up on everyone’s instagram stories for the next 3-4 days before the next ragebait cycle. hopefully we all have a primary source we can go to that isn’t ragebait and keeps us grounded. if you want a discounted price on Ground News, you can subscribe using my link for 40% off ($5 a month) the link is groundnews.com/flarin

we can get agitated and try to shame people we know into political organizing, but they probably won’t stick with it. your message just gets lumped in with all the other things people are told they should do in life, whether it’s organizing-specific or something personal. people may join you once or twice at a protest, a picket, a mutual aid event, or a tenant meeting, out of shame, guilt, peer pressure, or people-pleasing tendencies. but one or two months later, the negative feelings turn into background noise.
what we need is to be present, express our own interests, and wait for other people to form their own desire or want for political organizing. sometimes that may never happen if people are really insulated / alienated from any struggles, or are too overwhelmed by day-to-day struggles trying to survive. but for many other people, there will be a moment where they become more interested or aware of something they care about, and they talk to you about wanting to DO something. that’s when we can build on their internal want or desire, and help them make something happen. we want to “yes, and people” instead of telling them “you should.”
