At the beginning of 2025 I spent an intense month traveling Morocco with my father Abdelkbir. We were confronted with much grief and loss, tied to threads that weaved our lives and realities together with those of the misfortunes of our family and the still omnipresent oppressive atmosphere of lingering colonial structures. But the travel brought us closer. We got to know each other like never before. And we followed with immense joy those loose threads to stitch back together the ties we had lost with some of our family members. It was in that month-long journey I became mesmerised by the beauty and intricacy of zellige, its mosaic geometric patterns emerging from a centuries old tradition. Binding mathematics, theology, spirituality and art tightly into hallucinatory patterns, zellige remains a testimony of the glorious time of Al-Andalus and the Islamic Golden Age in SWANA. Slowly attempting to learn the craft of zellige was a way for me to find a metaphor for this journey. The slow and bittersweet process of finding my way back into a culture, a language, a tradition, a reality which always felt so close and familiar, but denied by circumstances. After I returned to Vienna, I spent the next 6 months at @hofderkulturen residency, going through the process of zellige from scratch.

Introducing the QMA Artist Collective of 2025! DUNIA SAHIR (@aainud ) Dunia Sahir is a Slovenian/Italian-Moroccan research-led artist and scientist based in Vienna, who works with several mediums to investigate practices of knowledge-making, emphasizing the importance of emotions, memory, and ancestral knowledge in the process. Their poetic inquiries tackle established boundaries to confront the passively accepted limitations they impose. Dunia’s work often crosses these boundaries to highlight their irony. Combining a profound knowledge of natural sciences with theoretical and geopolitical analysis, as well as history, Dunia focuses on intuition and the stickiness of embodied feeling and sense-making that intertwines all of these fields. Dunia Sahir will be working with Sattva Giacosa. Credit of the portrait: Maya Mariang Credit of the project image: Felix Lenz – Design: @azapatat Supported by Stadt Wien

We are pleased to present our last year’s overdue grantee: Dunia Sahir @aainud , a Slovenian-Italian-Moroccan research-led transdisciplinary artist and scientist based in Vienna, who works with several mediums to investigate practices of knowledge-making, emphasizing the importance of somatic and ancestral knowledge in the process. They are generally interested in topics that touch upon movement and forms of nomadism we carry within us and inherit. In their work for MEZEKERE, Sahir explored the idea of reclaiming processes of knowledge-making through (re)performing “games of gaze” to reconceptualize movement. ✨ 🎥ABOUT THE PROJECT 🎥✨ Inspired by the legacy of predecessors who have empowered marginalized communities and fought for their lands, Sahir’s film project emphasizes the importance of reclaiming one’s own history as a form of resistance. The film particularly focuses on Morocco’s colonial history while connecting points from Morocco to Algeria and Austria. Their proposal fascinated the jury with its intention to use the medium of dreams and ancestral desires to speak to complex transnational necropolitical and repressive structures of capitalism and colonialism. Especially, Sahir aims to collect and embrace fragmented stories, lands, and experiences through poetic intergenerational storytelling and personal and historical archives. While artistically dealing with their own ancestral and family traditions, Sahir emphasizes a collective aspect and process of narrating from the clear positionality of a queer diaspora migrant in Vienna. The jury also recognizes the significance of Sahir’s proposal in bringing together various migrant communities, including queer Arab and BIPOC communities, amidst the rising tide of Anti-Arab racism.
