The Assyrian American Association of Southern California, represented by Ramond Takhsh and Peter Warda from the board of advisors, joined several Assyrian community leaders and activists from the Central Valley at the California State Senate Chamber for the passage of Senate Concurrent Resolution 22, which commemorated April 1, 2025 as Assyrian New Year 6775.
Special thanks to the office of Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil for authoring the resolution, which highlighted the importance of Kha b’Nissan as well as the rich history of both our nation as a whole and in California.
Pictured as well are seven other Senators, including Senator Suzette Martinez-Valladares who represents a significant Assyrian population in the Santa Clarita Valley in LA County.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women who are the foundation of our families and the strength of our community. Assyrian mothers have long carried the spirit of our people with grace, courage, and unconditional love—preserving our language, traditions, and values through every generation.
No matter where life has taken our people, your care and sacrifices continue to keep our heritage alive. You are the storytellers of our history, the source of comfort in our homes, and the enduring example of resilience and faith.
Today, we thank you for the countless ways you inspire, support, and uplift those around you. Your love reaches far beyond your families—it strengthens an entire community and ensures that our culture continues to thrive for generations to come.
May this day bring you the same warmth, happiness, and appreciation that you so selflessly share with others every day.
Happy Mother’s Day! 💗
With heartfelt gratitude, The Assyrian American Association of Southern California

Today marks the 111th Anniversary of the Genocide that claimed the lives of 1.5 million Armenians, two-thirds of the Assyrian nation, and hundreds of thousands of Greeks in a systematic campaign of extermination carried out by the Ottoman Empire.
In California, this day is also observed as Genocide Awareness Day — a statewide holiday “for all to reflect on past and present genocides, but especially those that have felt the impact of these atrocities and groups that have found refuge in California, including, but not limited to, the Holocaust, Holodomor, and the Genocides of the Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Cambodian, and Rwandan communities”
As we honor the memory of those who were lost, we are also reminded that Assyrians and Armenians are still being persecuted in our ancestral homelands. Our communities continue to endure displacement, violence, erasure of cultural heritage, and the ongoing threat of being driven from lands where we have lived for thousands of years.
We stand with our Armenian brothers and sisters in remembrance, in truth, and in the ongoing pursuit of justice, accountability, and the right of our peoples to live freely and securely in our ancestral homelands.
Never forgotten. Never denied. Never repeated.

During the years of the Genocide, Near East Relief and several American churches played an important role in documenting the atrocities committed against our people and helping rally much-needed humanitarian support. Among those efforts was an orphanage in Hamadan, Iran, which cared for 800 Assyrian children. These newspaper clippings offer a glimpse into the scale and significance of that work.
That legacy has not been forgotten. In AJR 41 (2014), the California Legislature formally commended the extraordinary service provided by Near East Relief to survivors of the Genocide of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek peoples. That recognition has continued in subsequent years, including through SR 87 and AR 97 (2026).
It is impossible not to wonder how many more lives would have been lost without efforts like these.
