Emory Douglas, who was the Black Panther Party’s Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture, is the guest on next Tuesday’s Art is Awesome podcast. It was an honor to get to talk to Emory and walk through his show at the African-American Art and Culture Complex. He talked about studying graphic art at City College of San Francisco, first meeting the cofounders of the Black Panther party when he was just 21 and becoming the person who shaped what the newspaper looked like, and director Spike Lee coming out to meet with him about a movie poster for Da 5 Bloods. Thanks to curators Rio Yanez and Rosalind McGary. @aaaculturecomplex @rioyanez @rosalindmcgary @art_ccsf

A Mother’s Legacy ✨ This Mother’s Day weekend felt especially meaningful — honoring the women who give us life through creativity, connection, and community. A reminder that nurturing, safety, and love are things we create together. I was deeply honored to have my mother model for our creative sanctuary. Happy Mother’s Day to my mother and muse @cavanahblackbuttafly @cavanahartstudios 🤍 You continue to inspire me to love myself more deeply and to keep spreading light in the world. Thank you to everyone who joined us for Figure Drawing & Tea. Gathering in creative community reminds us of the power of art to liberate, heal, and connect us. Next gathering in June — link in bio. Just got back from San Francisco after two really beautiful screenings and Q&As as part of Black Film as Protest | A Season of Discourse. Really grateful to everyone who came through, watched the films, asked questions, and shared space with me. It meant a lot to connect with so many thoughtful artists, filmmakers, and community members, and to hear the responses to the work in real time. A lot of the conversations this weekend centered around Afrofuturism, speculative storytelling, alternate worlds, and the possibilities of Black sci-fi cinema, which made the experience especially meaningful for me as a filmmaker. Huge thank you to Maria Judice, the African American Arts & Culture Complex, and BlackMaria Microcinema for the invitation and hospitality. 🖤 Photographs by @shantreverite #BlackFilmAsProtest #BlackCinema #Afrofuturism #SciFiFilm #SpeculativeFiction
