Artist Spotlight 🍋✨
My name is Alex Sutherland and I’m an artist based in Southampton.
My practice is multidisciplinary - and by that I mean I flit between mediums frequently (much to my own frustration). Since graduating in Fine Art from WSA [ @wsa_ba_fineart ] l’ve worked across multiple mediums; photography, assemblage art, ceramics and moving image.
What tends to drive my ideas is the intuitive notion that every creative decision I make is predisposed.
Unpacking the past and sifting through familiar imagery and objects usually fuels my art making. I see my practice as a therapy, sometimes it feels too intense to get into and other times I crack open a fossil in my memory and the creative content flows.
Besides my art practice I work as a learning officer and facilitate creative workshops for children and families. Working alongside children allows me to engage in a more playful style of art making and exercises my imagination.
You can find more of my work on my own work and the outcomes from creative workshops I run on my instagram @a_sutherlanda

21st Sep 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️❤️ I hosted a family friendly banner making workshop @ght_soton@aspacearts
We responded to the themes in @iangiles exhibition Everyone Involved and Southampton’s Queer stories❤️
Join us this Saturday at God’s House Tower where artist Alex (@a_sutherlanda ) will be leading a family friendly drop-in creative workshop in partnership with Southampton City Council (@southamptoncitycouncil )
Workshop Details:
⏰ 2:00pm - 4:30pm
📍 God’s House Tower
🎟️ Free drop-in workshop, no booking necessary!
Using acrylic paint, retro fabrics and stencil slogans we will paint and construct our own fabric banners that celebrate LGBTQIA+ people and their stories in Southampton.
This workshop is a chance for kids and their adults to get creative by responding to God’s House Tower’s exhibitions, Everyone Involved by Ian Giles (@iangiles ) and Southampton’s Queer Stories.
In 1976 the CHE (Campaign for Homosexual Equality) came to Southampton for their annual conference. This was a significant event as Southampton City Council welcomed them after other councils had refused to host them.
The mantra of the Gay Liberation Front movement was ‘Gay is Good’ -a message of self-love. This workshop is intended to spread messages of self-love through conversation and creative outcomes.
These outcomes will be exhibited at in the Crawford Room at God’s House Tower for the final weekend of Everyone Involved, from Friday 25th - Sunday 27th October.
Acrylic paint is quick drying meaning you can make more than one banner and take some home with you too. Remember to dress for mess! All materials (as well as guidance) will be provided.

Part 1 of ‘Socially Ltd’
Work made for @zestartscollective ‘s recent exhibition Brief Attempt @ght_soton
Captured on a 35mm film, these cropped photographs had a purpose assigned to them even before development. To be saved as a nostalgic trip for the future. At some point you will view a photo of someone from their youth, in an unfamiliar scene from an unfamiliar time. I wonder why people capture these kinds of photos. Other than to remember, is it for the nostalgic feeling, is it to provide evidence of our past to others?
These works address the natural shift that occurs during your late 20s early 30s. When endless nights start become capped at midnight and we all grow apart slightly. It can feel like the end of an era or it can feel like a new phase in life. The photos are an archive of our youth, they preserve the spirit of that time through snapshots of social hands, cans of lager and share bags of crisps.

‘Giving Fortitude : 01’
84x59cm
Giving fortitude: 01 is the first piece in a series that addresses feelings of displacement with nostalgic imagery.
Referencing content that was present during my early years, it’s a culmination of drawing, collage and ceramic.
The curtain maze is a motif that’s been present in the background of my practice. It’s a reference to memories I have of temporary accommodation. We improvised our space by hanging bed sheet partitions, giving us rooms within a room.
My little pony (in two states of being) offers comfort with a nonsensical statement, directed at a child that’s been split into four states.
Giving fortitude: 01 directly explores my experience of childhood nostalgia triggered by a brand of toy pony.
