Being Alone Together is the special edition of the weekly silent reading session I’m just here to read in Eindhoven. This special session combine silent reading with exquisite corpse writing as a method and medium reflecting on the idea of solitude and solidarity as a response to the core of the exhibition Together Tomorrow: Reimagining Everyday Practices ——— Since May this year, I’ve been hosting a silent reading session I’m Just Here to Read in Eindhoven. As a nomad group, initially, we had our sessions at the lovely @eat.nor , and after summer break, from September on, we currently gather at the friendly community space @demo.eindhoven . I imagine that we’re like those trees in the rainforest, with crown shyness, being close but keeping distance, the bare minimum socialization. Lush and healthy, but sometimes you don’t wanna dance and you don’t wanna wipe your tears, alone. The idea of this session is simply just to read somewhere with people around, knowing that there’s someone as nerd as you are, with no pressure to talk or actively socializing. We all know sometimes you just need a tiny little bit of peer pressure to finish that book you just started few pages but then got distracted by Netflix or the endless scrolling. Come read with us! Because this sentence is successfully meaningful. The worst case is failure, or, is just failure. You failed the trick in front of your crush even if you performed 100 times successfully before. The cake you made for 2 hours and it tastes really bad. Application being turned down, rejected, UNFORTUNATELY. There would be times that your failure means other’s success. But still, we get up and try. Failure keeps us aimful. “I can’t be failing all the time… right?” Failure, lack of success, the neglect or omission of expected or required action. What is failure after all? We failed good this time. Nature made a funeral for happy hours at Victoriapark, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. April, 2023. - 這讓我想起開始墓葬的我們近親的祖先，尼安德塔人。在六萬年前或是更早，他們，或者就是我們受傷了會得到照顧，傷口得以癒合；死去了就有人把我們放在用山間野花做成的花毯上，將遺體和眼淚一同埋葬。 在伊拉克地區的Shanidar洞穴發現花葬的學者Solecki在1975年的Science期刊中寫道：“儘管身體已腐朽，但精神是現代的。（Although the body was archaic, the spirit was modern,）”。也許我的翻譯曲解了，但我不認為我們可以後設地看待他們的精神，以一種“現代”的方式。我們何時現代過？ This reminds me of Neanderthals' flower burial. Neanderthals were discovered as the first who started the ritual of burial. The skeletons found in Shanidar Cave in Iraq showed the evidence of injuries tended and healed and the pollens under and around a child's skeleton indicated that flowers was used in the burial. More than 60000 years ago, the sick and wounded had been cared for, they (or we) healed each other. When a life passed away, someone in the last Ice Age ranged the mountainside to collect flowers and placed the dead on the flower mat, buried them (or us) with probably sorrow and tears. The excavator Ralph Solecki wrote of Neanderthals, in Science, in 1975, "Although the body was archaic, the spirit was modern," I might be lost in the translation, but I don't think that we could interpret the spirit from a "modern perspective" in modern age.
