Extended to July 27! I’m happy my photograph is included in Women Heavy, curated by @dkessingerarts at @gardenship.art in Kearney, NJ. Women Heavy brings together over 30 artists working in video, sculpture and 2D work. Donna Kessinger is an artist, curator, and creative director of Gardenship. She is also known for her oral herstories of artists including Mary Beth Edelson, Carolee Schneemann and Kate Millett. Gardenship is an artist-run space in a 2-acre warehouse complex on the Hackensack River. It has wood and metal shops, an iron forge, and a 25-studio residency program that supports large-scale sculpture and fabrication. The gallery is open Wednesdays 3 - 6pm and by appointment. I’m happy to share installation shots of Plan and Elevation, at Sweet Lorraine Gallery until May 31st. The new work revolves around a steel construction called Swing an Arc I. It traces the arc of the compass used to construct a cube. If the cube were a dwelling, the arc raises the roof, simple and true. The 3-part panel paintings approach the interplay between plan and elevation in a different spirit. What I found was figural and, increasingly, relational — a geometry of arcs and angels with and among us. I am thrilled to collaborate with my partner, acclaimed lighting designer Linnaea Tillett, on an installation for the Plus/Space at FiveMyles. Wing Study 1 explores the veiled geometry of the cube — its birth story — through three constructions and light. Sited in a former street-facing garage, the installation is open all night, weather-permitting, through January 7th. Wing Study 1 revolves around a steel construction called Swing and Arc. It traces the arc of the compass used to construct a cube. Projected into space, this arc becomes a wing. Follow it and a star and moon appear. These night forms are tokens of the curved and expanding universe, its primary curvature. Light traverses it with her companion, the wing. The larger question we ask ourselves is whether light and other geometries can alter the vibration a space and propose other kinds of harmony. I was honored to be one of the designers of the Children’s Memory Garden in Nashville. The garden is dedicated to the memory of children who lost their lives to violence. The garden was designed in collaboration with victim advocates, the landscape architecture firm of Nelson Byrd Woltz and my partner, Linnaea Tillett and her lighting design firm. Light allows loved ones to visit the garden from twilight to dawn and supports the delicate symbolism of the site. Part of the design includes shimmering points of light in the pavement around the willow oak Memory Tree. I designed the layout using a geometry found in the design of sacred spaces, the Vesica Piscis.
