Wow. My photo of Nilda Palacios was included as one of
@guardian_us ās best photos of 2024. Thank you Gail Fletcher and ThalĆa Juarez for choosing to include this image on the list, thank you to ThalĆa for commissioning me for this important story, and to Nilda for her openness about her story, willingness while having her portrait taken, and for having me in her home.
I wasnāt expecting to get this email, and it feels nice to receive this kind of unexpected recognition. Being a freelance photographer isnāt easy, and balancing new motherhood with a freelance photography career is harder (lol). The day of this assignment, my husband
@ivaninovuelven held down the fort with a 7-month-year-old Rio, and for other assignments my sister
@amandavivarevalo did too. A lot of family and friends have supported me (while Iām at it) so thank you if thatās you. Itās sometimes hard for me to celebrate the small wins but this feels like one.
This was my first assignment for
@guardian_us and the first time I can remember that an editor encouraged me to make portraits on film. I ended up bringing three cameras to be safe, including a digital. Iām very happy this one on 120 film was the hero image. I didnāt even pick up a medium format camera until 3 years ago when I set a goal to try it during an accountability photography workshop, and then
@arizzza let me borrow hers. I also have to shout out
@diversifyphoto , which is how Thalia (a fellow member) found me. Scans by
@underdogfilmlab .
