In Search of Grande (2014), a 20 minute documentary.
I came up in the space between documentary filmmaking & commercial work. Directing, shooting, and editing whatever kept the lights on. There’s absolutely nothing fancy about this film, but it is a good story. I used a DSLR (1080p!) and a GoPro. An ATV strapped with two Pelican cases served as my camera truck. No crew. No gimbals. No client monitors. Just three people, moving through a barren place, trying to tell a story and learn the craft along the way.
It was hard. It was fun and it reminded me why I love filmmaking in the first place; by being there, and letting the work come from the experience rather than a prompt…
Lately I’ve been spending more time in the commercial and narrative space as a DP, but I still think about projects like this and would love to do more.
