Coming soon to the Spinning Mill Loft...
We're excited to announce that our Ones to Watch 2025 artist Alice Boot will be opening a solo exhibition in our Spinning Mill Loft later this month following a 2 week residency in our Weaving Shed.
Alice is the recipient of Leeds University’s 2025 Berkofsky Award and the exhibition is the culmination of their research. Familiar Threads explores domestic and industrial narratives of woven textile.
In collaboration with the Sunny Bank Mills Museum & Archive, the show highlights the fragmented fibres, stacked sample swatches and disintegrated guard books living in the old Warping Rooms. Together, with the restoration of a family Douglas Andrew tabletop loom, the show explores the two histories of the industrial textile mill and family history of domestic Cottage Weaving.
With themes of fragmentation, deconstruction and reconstruction, the exhibition places historical weavings and tools alongside contemporary sculpture, highlighting shared and distinct stories of weaving.
Join Alice for the launch event on Saturday 22nd November 13:00 - 16:00. The exhibition will then run until Thursday 4th December.
Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 – 16:00 in the Spinning Mill Loft. Closed on Mondays. FREE ENTRY.
Visit the Upcoming Exhibitions page on our website for access information and more about Alice's practice!

A story of restoration! A few months ago I was given a Douglas Andrew loom by a family member. Full of stories, it had been living in a garage for years and fallen into disuse. With the help of @_jobriscoe I have been able to breathe life back into this beautiful structure! Come along on the 22nd Nov to see what I have been making with it!
Announcement!! I am having my first solo show at @sunnybankmills from Nov 22nd to Dec 4th! ✨ I invite you all to come along to the launch on the 22nd November 1pm - 4pm at the Spinning Mill Loft!✨ The show will be a culmination of the research I have been doing for the past few months, reflecting on the textile industry of the north, family ties to weaving and my own contemporary sculpture practice. I hope to see many of you there!
