Welcoming AAA* Studio to our Asian Heritage Week Naarm/Melbourne line up. Within the gallery, they will present ‘A* Soft Gate’, an installation that we will light up on our opening night so you can watch it evolve over time.
A* Soft Gate explores what happens when rigid systems designed to contain human behaviour are infiltrated by soft, unstable matter.
At the centre of the installation is a cast-iron gate — a structure historically associated with control, separation, and access. It defines boundaries: inside and outside, permitted and denied, private and public. In this work, the gate is enveloped in layers of wax — a material that records accumulation, delay, and touch.
When ignited, the wax begins to melt, drip, and burn. The structure no longer performs as a stable boundary. Instead, it leaks.
The work proposes emotion not as something immediate or expressive, but as something stored. It accumulates over time, held within systems that attempt to contain it. Under heat, pressure, time, or proximity—it is released.

A.A.A Studio operates as an open system where authorship is dispersed and meaning remains unstable.
Through participatory works and public encounters, we explore emotional exchange in everyday contexts — where language, materials, and actions become tools for connection.
Our work creates temporary situations where intimacy emerges without identity, obligation, or permanence.

A (Access)*
-
A system of control is relocated.
A branch carries what once defined access.
Locks, removed from their function, no longer secure —
they align, repeat, and begin to shift.
Not opening, not closing —
but held in between.
In displacement, function dissolves into form.
In repetition, structure begins to resemble language.
What once enforced a boundary
becomes something porous, unstable, and reconfigurable.
Within AAA,
anything can become A.

No structure stands alone.
“ A ”
This form is derived from a door lock —
a structure designed to hold, control, and define access.
A boundary made to contain.
By abstracting its geometry,
the lock becomes a letter.
The structure enters language.
But within Soft Gate,
structures do not remain fixed.
They soften.
They leak.
They begin to change from within.
A no longer only holds —
What was once a boundary
becomes porous, unstable, alive.
Within AAA,
anything can become A.
A is not a fixed form,
but a container —
for structure, for transformation.

🚪Through combustion, the material shifts from form to energy.
Emotion is framed as something that is not only felt, but also consumed — exhausted
through its own release.
Exhibition extended to 24th April @novacancygallery with @projectzzero

A* Soft Gate — Phase II (coming soon)
The second gate is about to emerge.
Please stay close.
If the first was about holding,
this one begins with burning.
Flame introduces time into the structure.
It does not break it —
it works from within.
Wax does not disappear.
It softens, gathers, resists, then slowly gives way.
Through burning, what was held begins to change state.
Each drip records a moment.
Each collapse becomes a quiet release.
The gate no longer holds as it once did.
Its boundaries begin to shift —
from solid to porous,
from fixed to unstable.
This work continues to ask:
What happens when a system built to contain
can no longer hold what it carries?
Coming soon.
Stay with us.

A Soft Gate (A.A.A Studio, 2026) presents a cast-iron gate engulfed in melting wax, where rigid systems of control are destabilised as accumulated emotion slowly leaks under heat, time, and pressure.
