Every year, my community and I use Beardfest as a way to manifest dreams. The community is filled with passionate, talented, artistic souls that are always striving for new ways to grow and connect. This year, we were able to manifest something truly remarkable. After touring the world and working on records together, my Beardfest co-director and best friend Sam Gutman and I formed bonds of trust with Ms. Lauryn Hill and Zion Marley. This lead to Zion saying yes when we proposed that he come and perform at our little festival, for our little community in the South Jersey Pinelands. Out of the Beardspace (plus Jeremy Boyd!) worked for months to craft his set of originals and a few of his grandfather Bob’s tunes in a way that felt right for a “jam festival”. This alone felt like an amazing combination of our worlds, and like a knock out Friday night headlining set. Then the concept of having Ms. Hill come out to make a guest appearance and tie song concepts together came about. We wanted to end Zion’s set with his new single “Marching (From Zion)”, and have Ms. Hill come out to perform her beautiful song “To Zion” which is sampled in Zion’s song. Lo and behold, she was gracious enough to say yes and make it happen. I feel the need to put this out there in a strong way: the negative image of Ms. Lauryn Hill that you see in the media sometimes couldn’t be further from the person that I know. She’s not just a legendary and timeless artist. She’s a MOTHER, and a FRIEND, and an incredibly compassionate and giving soul who shows up for her people, and who has an open heart. We’re so grateful that she trusted us to host her and her beloved Zion. (CONTINUED IN COMMENTS PLZ READ)
