Where we wait.

The Garub Horses having a nap There are a couple of theories for the intriguing mystery of how they came to be there.... One theory suggests they were escapees from the Kubub stud farm that was established in 1912 and later abandoned during World War I. Other theories include horses released by the German army (Schutztruppe) during their retreat in 1915, and horses from a German baron stranded with a ship full of animals at the end of the 19th century. They have adapted to desert living and can go for 2 - 3 days between visiting the Garub water hole. This century old population is threatened by a clan of spotted hyenas that prey on the foals.

The Tower of Tiras The remains of a windmill tower with canvas sails, designed by Siegfried Schnebel, who had taught mathematics, physics and chemistry at the German School in Lüderitz for years before taking over Neiseb farm from his father in 1985. He constructed this windmill, using mostly material from his brother's scrap yard, in order to access the abundant water supply 30m below the surface for the 400 citrus trees, 50 sultana vines, 700 prickly pears and a little lucerne that his father had already planted. The project was never completed, as he sold the farm and moved on in 1997.
