We absolutely love all the dainty details from this wedding! The soft palette of whites and peaches felt so perfect for this sweet couple, who are high school sweethearts - such a beautiful reflection of their relationship and how it’s grown from their teen years into adulthood. Everything about the day just felt so genuinely them.
Coming from the Bay Area, we brought in live oyster shuckers, which their guests absolutely loved, we knew it would be a big hit for a crowd that grew up together by the coast. To end the night, a shave ice treat added the sweetest island touch, so fitting for this couple and such a fun way to close out the celebration. Not to mention, the couple’s dog was found peeking through dainty little details throughout the wedding. So adorable!

Katie & Justin woke early to catch sunrise at a tiny beach on Oahu. I think, in a lot of ways, engagements and sunrises feel similar-- fresh, new, energetic, a full day of possibility ahead. (Weddings, on the other hand, would be like mid-morning brunch: festive, social, colorful.) The sunrise doesn't last very long, especially here near the equator. So we had just a little time to really revel in it... and we all agreed it was the perfect way to start the day. <3

Last month Michelle and Jake tied the knot in a place very close to where their love story began. After leaving Hawaii for college, these high school sweethearts chose to return to Honolulu to say "I do" at Michelle's family home. Their backyard wedding was a beautiful testament to the journey they've shared. Together we walked down familiar neighborhood streets, and along the seawall they know so well. There's something incredibly poetic about coming full-circle. This day was more than a celebration; it was a homecoming, a tapestry woven with the threads of love, history, and nostalgia. My go-to sources of inspiration for wedding photos aren't other weddings. It's the work of painters, sculptors, landscape artists, or photographers of completely different disciplines. When I saw Syd standing on the shoreline with her dress blowing in the wind, I immediately thought of one of my favorite paintings, Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus."
There's a saying that there's nothing original in art, and I believe that's mostly true. But there is so much fun in finding new interpretations of classic ideas, when we can connect the thread of a contemporary moment to the timeless expression of beauty or joy or the human experience.

In the midst of the orchestrated beauty of a wedding day, it's the unscripted moments that excite me most. Those in-between moments-- tableaus of genuine emotion that hint at your relationships and history--are the elements that make the tradition of a wedding become uniquely your own. So I will *always* photograph you walking from here to there, will always be ready to record hidden glances or gestures, and will always be on the lookout for those moments where everyone aligns *just right* for a composition that helps tell your story. <3
As I prepare to head to Europe for a sort of sabbatical/ creative refueling next month, I'm thinking a lot about Elyn and Bruce's wedding last year. On the slopes of Diamond Head, tucked amongst palm, olive, and monkeypod trees, La Pietra is reminiscent of an old Italian villa-- right in the heart of Honolulu. Afternoon light cascades over tiled rooftops and onto vine-covered staircases and textured plaster walls below. Elyn worked closely with @nicholeweddings to combine the old-world charm of La Pietra with her love of the ocean, resulting in a playful mix of tropical-meets-European (just like me, next month 😉) This wedding was published on @weddingchicks .
